Macarthy incident (not fishing related)

This is such a tragic event and as the information comes to hand I wonder about the ability of clubs to manage the lifestyles of their assets (human beings). I don't want to pre-empt any forthcoming official findings but it is looking blatantly obvious the this poor guy was on a bender and lost track of what was going on. He left a spot with mates and walked 4 kms to another place and it seems plain to me that he had no idea where he was or what he was doing.

Why these big trips? Why not just go away from the club for a while and spend time with the family or the g/friend and do some fishing? Why do we see the need to expose these young guys to all that is on offer???? Double standards in my opinion.

Its just a holiday with mates like others do all the time. Its there "Annual" leave i can see ya point tho i think id rather spend the time at home with the missus and kids and maybe take a small trip later on fishing wld be nice.  But these trips happen all the time even at the ameture level.

Footballers? Pretty simple, its the press.

Because there they are just a bunch of nobodies and there is no point the press covering them. What do you think happens every time they get on a bender here?

the ability of clubs to manage the lifestyles of their players? like till said they probably went to vegas partly because they cant have a drink here in peace, and partly becuase theyre young and got some cash and they WANT to. Shit id go if i could.

If you went on a fishing trip with some mates from work, and died, would it be works fault?

The 'management of lifestyles' of players has gone extreme in the last few years.

Not to mention we're always looking for someone else to blame.

Something like this could have happened to most off us at 22. When bent you can and do some stupid things. And accidents happen all the time. Thats what this is, a tragic accident.

They arent children but grown men, and we cant expect them to be nannied. If we request this, soon it will be us nannied, and I think there is enough of this already.

If a young bloke wants to go to Vegas and get messed up that's his choice!

Hitler wanted "management of lifestyles" didn't he?

My thinking

also Uncle, from what has been said about the poor chaps last phone call to his girlfriend, my gut feeling booze and a spiked drink, as he sounded like he was with the fairies talking to his g/friend.

Absolute tragedy. I have thought for years that the clubs, the AFL and football media (particularly Melbourne based) expect far to much from these young men. They're in the prime of their lives yet they're expected to act like robots and be role models for the community. Give me a break, it's no wonder that when they get the chance to become anonymous that they run amok, yet they're not equiped to handle it. Perhaps if they weren't absolutely crucified whenever they made a mistake that a lot of people in their 20s make every Saturday night they would be better equiped to handle such occassions.

Unfortunate Tragedy and may stem from alcohol bans during the season? Drug references give me the shits. No-one ever been drunk and called someone at 4.30 in the morning sounding confused and upset? Don't forget, they only left here on Saturday our time.

just referring to them as "assets" probably explains a bit about the AFLs attitude.
