Lowrance overheating
Submitted by davidbland50 on Mon, 2012-08-27 19:52
Out yesterday for a bit of a fish as most of you know, and went to check on the screen of the fishfinder, to my surprise, the whole front of my HDS5 was extremely hot. So much so, I could be barely touch the buttons!
Got home without any dramas, and the unit worked all the way. Today, I rang Navico and spoke to someone in technical support, they suggested a soft reset. I did that, after backing up my waypoints and trails but to no avail. Still running hot after a few minutes. Anybody else had a similar problem and what did they do? What was the eventual outcome? Any advice would be appreciated.

Haven't had any problems with mine so hard to offer any advice, curious to know if yours is in the sun and what the weather was like on the day. Mines in full sun as I have taken the canopy off due to my height and naturally gets quite warm from this but not from the internals, Was mainly the plastic body getting warm with the sun rather than the buttons and not to the point where you couldn't touch it by any means. I now put a hat over the top of the GPS and sounder (sep units) mainly to keep the sun off the screen to make viewing easier but also to help keep the body cool. Sounds like your problem is different (and concerning)
Hope you sort it out

Not wrong
Paul,
I daren't think what would happen if it got too hot while out and caught fire even in the river? I must admit, I have not been too happy with the HDS5 since I bought it. Considering the base maps are almost unrecognisable and the cost of a card is over $300 is ridiculous when you compare it to something like the Garmin GPSMap 551S which I had before. I got the SD card for that so I could have 3D view above and below the water as well as auto guidance which was really excellent. Neither of which comes with the card on the HDS5.

Yep agree the base maps are
Yep agree the base maps are very poor, I bought the navionics gold card with mine so never had to actually use it with the base map but did notice when I pulled the card out that the base map was way off the mark.
Your heating up problem does sound concerning and I hope you are able to get it sorted with minimal trouble.
Cheers

David, i run the same GPS and
David, i run the same GPS and havent had any probs with it so far ,it a couple of years old.I did ask at the local boat shop where i get my boat serviced about your problem and was told it wasnt a common fault at all and he suggested that Lowrance would be the people to contact.I dont think i would take it to sea in that nic as you say could have nasty consequences. The guy at the boat shop did say that they are meant to have some kind of heat suppression system installed and he had heard of them getting hot but not to your extreme. Let us know how you get on.

Yes, I have spoken to navico who handle lowrance service in Australia. I will be sending it to them next week to get it sorted. I will let you know how it went.

Thanks Snappermiles,
I did that just before as the guy from Navico asked me to first try a soft reset and see if that made any difference. I did take it out on the river last Saturday though, it did once again heat up but I also noticed the page screen for waypoints, trails and routes was illegible with every second letter missing. It went off to Navico today!

good to catch up with you at the rally! bit of a bummer to get your boat running then have these problems! your boat looks a whole lot different in the pictures to what it is! the pod looks huge but when i seen it it actually looks good!

A good rally
Thanks for the compliment on the pod, though. It has really proved useful where fishing off the back is concerned. Also takes the place of a boat ladder for getting on and off the boat. Might yet be changing back to a Garmin if this lowrance keeps on playing up. Let's hope this time it behaves itself.
