Low profile baitcaster for barra fishing?
Submitted by HuggyB on Mon, 2009-08-17 13:57
Go ahead and recommend me a few. Most of my searching points towards the Curado at this stage. I'd prefer a low profile b/c, I have a daiwa luna for my "barrel" b/c - something that wont be taxing on you to cast all day.
Cheers!

Ahhh, then because he mentioned not taxing to cast all day.... Steez
Though, they're supposedly FW only? Probably due to the magnesium, but then other magnesium reels dont say FW only (e.g. chronarch mg). Non-mg, I guess the alphas are the next lightest?
tackletour should have heaps of reviews on low profile baitcasters, seeing how often they use them over there.

I like the look of the TD Zillion 50th Edition
Or if you can hang on Daiwa are bringing out a Zillion Coastal that sounds pretty good.

Banax Syren
Banax have developed the Syren. We released it at AFTA this year and had a phenomenal response. The reel is full alloy with precision machine cut brass gears and pinion. It has a 1 piece alloy frame. It has 11 shielded stainless steel ball bearings. There is a titanium line guide.
The engineering that has gone into the reel is amazing, put it in free spool and give it a spin and then go get a coffee while you wait for it to stop. The best part is the drag system which allows 5 kilos of pressure. The reels will be available in October at all stockists of quality fishing gear. 5 year warranty as well. If you need more info send me a PM.
Cheers

Did you mean $260 justa? PE3
Did you mean $260 justa?
PE3 or 30lb? Would be interesting running PE3/50lb just because you get more strength left over if it gets abraded (though, drag wise you'd be fishing as per 30lb line). Seen some guys use 80lb, but for abrasion, not strength (wouldnt want to try to unsnag it using the reel :S).
Col, the Zillion 50th is a nice reel, but the lower speed zillions would probably be more suited to barra lures. twitch pause twitch.
Must say I do like those alphas R-editions just cause they're so damn light, but supposed to be strong too. I guess the zillion/calais would be a bit heavier (in both regards). Theres a few in between though (e.g. sol). I dont know why the calaisDC is faster geared than the ASV though? I havent used any though, so cant give any recommendations. Tackletour reviews might help

I have a 400 Calcutta and I'd easily use that for Barra fishing. Had it for a few years now and I always take it out with me when I go fishing.

huggy - i have a zillion
huggy - i have a zillion which is nice, but reality is that the pluton or te are just much more suited. Reason being a few fold
1 - Barra lures are by their nature big and heavy, so you do not need superlite spool type stuff
2- Barra get BIG, and a meter plus barra takes a lot of stopping. I hooked one in the VIc river a few years back that took 50m of full locked drag plus full thumb on a calcutta 400b so the more drag the better for the bigger models.
3- yes low profiles are easier to "twitch" but in reality a bigger real actually balances out the heavier rod that is generally what is used for barra.
This all comes down a lot to where you are fishing for them, in Weipa where there are a lot of smaller fish then I loved my old chronarchs, but they got quickly destroyed in the Territory once we hit patches of bigger models.

I can go out tomorrow and buy the reel brand new including brand new td sensor for $360. Why would I want a second hand reel for the same price? Dont mean to be harsh, but you have to be realistic.

Hi.
Coupla yrs ago. We were messing around in "Prossie". Already had our fish.
I stuck a full roller 30lb game stick out the back with a Tica Lever drag 558 gold, on it.
Big barra took lure and just Bolted for sticks. Reel on full drag.
A good 25\30 yds.Never hardly slowed her down. (About 20lb drag)
Don't play with the big girls with toys. Unless you out in open.
I use Daiwa SW203 and Black Sheep 250 on my Baitcasters. and Accurate 870 Saltiga 30. jig rigs
for trolling.
Even they make you work when you get the big girls. But you lose less lures.
