At the local Tip

I moved house over the last 2 days. So today I had to drive to the tip in balcatta to drop of some rubbish.

When I arrived there I spotted a forklift load of fish!!!!!!!!!! There must have been 6 or 7 boxes of "fish on ice" on a forklift on the way in the dump. I think it was red emperor/ coral trout. I couldnt get close enough in time to get a pic or see exactly what it was. I just saw a heap of red fish in about snapper size going over the side!!!!

I can not believe how ppl can waste that amount of fish!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

They empty the oceans and then throw it in the dumpster And because of behavior like this from commercial fisheries we as rec.fisher have to suffer!

What a society!!!!!!!!

Seb

Thats a pity, cant stand

Thats a pity, cant stand wastage. Without jumping to conclusions there i'd doubt ignorance was coming into play, could off been a problem with the transportation, could have had something wrong with the levels off elements in the fish, list goes on (who knows). Its a hell of a shame but yeah........

Bit out of line to call a man

Tue, 2012-04-24 11:29

Bit out of line to call a man stupid for having an opinion don't you think? Aalfred clearly cares about his fisheries and you, from what I can tell share that with him. If you think he is wrong or misguided adress him appropriately and as a brother. Just my opinion but I think we are going to need to band together, com, rec and all if we are going to have a chance against the greenparks and future regs.

what the hell bitten?

Aalfred raises a good point about wastage. If you disagree then fair enough and explain why, as you have below, but your post above is just childish. Grow up!

Sounds like fish from a shop

Sun, 2012-04-22 20:08

Sounds like fish from a shop that's no longer fresh. I've always had friggin problem with this. Like you say aalfred we rec fishos are always the ones to suffer from commercial enterprise and waste. Way of the world sadly.

might be jumping to conclusions?

Sun, 2012-04-22 20:11

Im sure it would be a freezer failure or similar. Why would anyone dump it otherwise?

On the same note though, in Coral Bay years ago when we carted our own offal to the tip, it was heartbreaking to see some of the attempts at filletting.

5kg reds/rankins etc with just enough cutoff for a meal-with a chainsaw by the look!

 Bit rough to blame

Sun, 2012-04-22 22:45

Bit rough to blame commercial fisherman for that

Bet there are three guys who caught that who aren't getting paid next week because of a fuck up at the coop

I would guess that amature fisherman waste more fish than professionals

Can you elaborate on what you are suffering because of this or is it just an ill thought out statement

The point is mate that rec

The point is mate that rec fishers get the book thrown at them if we bring in something undersize or a fish too many over the bag limit. Yet the wastage by commercial operations (fish shops not the fishermen) goes largely unnoticed or unreported.Maybe it was a broken down freezer still a huge waste.

It's not just fish guys

Mon, 2012-04-23 07:14

Every day tonnes of produce goes to waste due to many factors including spoiled produce, sub-standard produce, breakdowns, the list goes on. Health regulations are the main reason for this. If we didn't have such regulations then the community would be at risk because the shop owners would rather sell spoiled produce than see it go to the tip. Periodically I will empty out my outside freezer and send some fish that is out of date to the tip. If we all do this then it would  be a real eye opener to measure the tonnes going to landfill from amateur cleanouts.

Pointing the finger at commercial fishermen for what you saw at Balcatta is, in my opinion, wrong and unneccessary. It doesn't help our cause as rec fishos any good either.

bait

Mon, 2012-04-23 09:14

just a thought could it possibly be re-frozen and sold as bait ? I know it wouldn't be fresh but you could possibly still use it maybe.

yip more than one shop will

Mon, 2012-04-23 11:41

yip more than one shop will be stuck with unsold " fresh fish" after a weekend and then trip the switch and call in for an isurance claim as spoiled stock!

not the last time you will see this, seen it with oranges and other fruit, fresh produce dumped & mulched to prevent the price dropping to low in the market.

Thanks for the info Seb, you

Mon, 2012-04-23 19:39

Thanks for the info Seb, you gotta wonder whats happening when you see stuff like this.. Someone in the commercial world has made a decision that was probably best for them at the time. I would love to know who and for why'

Bitten, So you one of the people who just go through life without asking a question hey. You just know do you? You must lead mensa or something? What was wrong with him posting a question about this and making some conclusion about what he had seen?

Forums are to gain and share information, but apparently not in this case

big difference between

Mon, 2012-04-23 20:47

big difference between fruit/vege and fish such as this is that the fish could have been frozen if it was really being dumped to keep the price up.

Id be inclined to say a freezer failure or similar.

Either way, there's no reason

Tue, 2012-04-24 11:09

Either way, there's no reason for the spoiled produce to not go back into the food chain. Insurance companies insist on it being dumped on record (which sucks) but some of the comments referring to rec fishos using an inland dump isn't excusable. Rotten roughage should be in the ground to keep fertile soil and spoiled fishstocks should go back in the ocean. I can't stand watching people throw old bait in the bin, feed the cycle. There's nothing wrong with questioning and aalfred has made us all question, good on him.
