Lizards on popper

Just wanting some feedback from any of you southeners that might target BIG flatties. ave any of you ever targeted them on popper, have been reading a few east coast stories and i know where quite a few big flatties dwell inthe Pilbara so i think it might be a good thing to do on the spring highs in the creeks on the flats.
If anyone has any stories / experience they wish to share on what worked tackle wise and technique wise i am pretty keen to hear your stoies

cheers

Lizard Fishing

I am a firm beliver that lizards are bottom dwellers. I have always used moving baits, live baits or diving lures. I have never tried poppers.

Flatty's on poppers

Thu, 2009-01-01 19:50

IMO, one of the best ways to catch them,  yes they are bottom dewellers but are a very aggressive feeder.

Bundegi flats is dynamite for big lizards on poppers, plus theres always queenies, lil gts and bream as a by catch, but i can live with that.Tongue out

Also the flats down here in the swan, east freo flats are ideal for flatties and whiting on poppers.

obviously the smaller poppers are the go 40-70mm in size with a large cup face for its size. Yo-zuri 3D popper would have to be the best for this (all sizes of flatties), otherwise the rebel pop-r's or r2s bubble pops are good aswell

as for action, work them really slow, and small bloops with just a flick of the rod tip to make sure the popper throws some water around. count to 3secs inbetween bloops/twitches and usually just your just about to go for the next twitch is when they'll strike.

finesse gear is obviously the way to go for casting the lighter poppers...ie. 4-8lb braid with 10lb leader.

Hope that helps a bit Brad

Cheers,
Sam

Not actively targetting them on poppers

Thu, 2009-01-01 22:34

But I have caught them as a by catch on small poppers meant for bream. If my memory serves me correct, they were caught in reasonably shallow (less than 2m).

But in honesty, I haven't targetted lizards for a looooong time. After catching the thumper Duskys (eg 70 - 80cm and 4 to 5kg) like I did in NSW when I lived there, the bartail flatties here just dont compete.

the biggest lizard

ive seen over here was about 70cm and caught in at least 30m of water so i dont think a popper would do the damage nor entice 1 up that far......but over east in shallow water they will venture up to the surface and attack a popper......it would be just like slow trolling a small baitfish...and when you have a 70 cm (3-5 kg) flattie take a popper its great fun on light gear........
SO MANY FISH.....SO FEW SICKIES!

Over east in( VIC)

and other places they have been poppering for lizzards for a while using recycled thong"s (the fooot type) also for bream with great success. Small rebel poppers are productive of the beach at Dampier boat ramp on the bottom of the tide.

BRad - I reckon you might get a lot more Jacks hitting you up there whilst targeting flatties - would be good fun if not short lived on the bream gear.
