Vietnamese fishmonger in the Stirling Central shopping centre has them in his live tank. They need heated water though otherwise go dormant.

Hey dude, sounds like a good pond.

I'd be concerned if the pool heater is electric, the running cost could be huge.

An option I have considered is a gas hot water system connected to a submersible pump and gas supplied from a gas bottle.

Also I have spoken to some who claim that having shallow areas of the pond with a black plastic floor to absorb heat from the sun.

Also, some years ago, I'd heard of pool cover that is clear plastic and inflatable. This can be used in winter as a 'greenhouse'.

Heating & chilling water is prob the most expensive of requirements in aquaculture.

There are pool heaters that run black poly but are not very efficient. But possible an old 'solarhart' type could be worth adding, or a combination of different heating.

Hope it alls works out. Good investment for some serenity.

thats a pretty nifty idea about the black plastic, should work ok. already got a peice of the pool cover your talkin about and yer ive been twisting and turning trying to decide the most effective way of heating it but i should figure something out . thinking solar for sure thought but then again that hot water system idea sounds a beuty if ya keep it simple. gonna have to have a think, cheers mate lovin the ideas guys!

I used to keep them in a tank, nightmare pet as they grow big quick and if they have been raised on live food...bust out the credit card because you will be forever buying molly's and goldies from the fish shop to feed the buggers. It's the very reason every second fisho with a bit of space up in the NT doesn't have a barra pond. If you do decide to keep some maybe just suss out what they are eating first. That said, they are awesome to watch stalking and boofing their prey!

Buy a Goldfish mate

With all the fuss involved and the likelihood the Barra will die (either from contamination or you eating it after a big night out) stick with something simple and friendly (and inedible LOL).
