Lemax or daiwa beach rod?

I'm looking Into getting a new heavy beach outfit, tossing up between a daiwa sensor surf 13ft in the 20-40 lb version or a lemax red sword or blue mountain 14ft in the 20-60 lb also matching it up with a shimano saragosa 18000 just wanted to know if any one had used these rods especially the lemax since I haven't seen very many reviews on them and I'm a bit worried the sensor surf wont be able to handle casting out big baits seeing as it's only rated 3-6 oz and the lemaxs are 2-10 oz . If anyone could helpme out would be awesome cheers

That must be other rods  to look at as well, Maybe get a blank and have one made up for you

Or go overhead 14ft that cast a country mile

have you looked at the daiwa tournament master surf, they only a few bucks more than a sensor surf but such better quality.

cast very nively too with the smaller guides

surf sensor + saragosa

Wed, 2011-09-07 10:13

Hi Mate

I havent tried the other 2 but I recently upgraded to a 13ft surf sensor and I am using it with the saragosa 18000 with 25 pound mono.

I used it the other weekend to chuck a scaley and a mulie with a 5oz star sinker in a paternoster rig. (trying for mulla at north mole)

it ended up being a massive rig as there was about a meter between baits with 2 x 3 point swivels so it did NOT fly well but managed to cast it over 50 meters.

hope this helps some...

Sensor

Wed, 2011-09-07 10:29

I haven't used or seen the lemax but own several sensors including the 13ft and can vouch for it being a very good rod, great action and it can go heavier than 6oz. If you want heavier have a look at the saltiga ballistic. A bit more info about sinker weight and size of baits also line weight may help us in recommending some other rods + how much your prepared to spend. Most rod builders can't build this style of rod cheaper than you can buy it off the shelf these days, I know cos I tried to get one built, instead I bought the ballistic

I havent used the rods your asking about but another option would be the poseidon bantam spin. Very versatile rod with 3 tips light medium and heavy ranging from 4-7 Oz. I recently bought the 14ft overhead version of the same and very happy with it. Reasonable price as well.

Do you mean the Leemax can cast 2-10 or is it two seperate rods a light and heavy version? Havent heard anything about those rods so would be interesting to hear from anyone who has used one.

 Lemax Blue Mountain and Red

Wed, 2011-09-07 11:47

Lemax Blue Mountain and Red Sword are good rods if well looked after from knocks&scratches(very thin blank) , if you do look after them they will serve you very well and can cast stuff a long ways away, action of the rod is quite stiff compared to sensor, then again i dont rate the sensor just feels too cheap for me although the blank is good.

If you choose to go with the lemax, make sure you ask about warranty, what it covers what drag setting you should use even though you know just "ask them" that way incase you do come back you have something to back you.

P.S-another rod to look at is the lemax president royal around $200-215 max 150g cast weight, so 4oz sinker and bait they go flying very far.

cheers for the replys ive looked at the tourament series and the ballistic awsome rods but there out of my price range, im looking to spend $300 max and yeh the casting weight is 2-10 oz on the lemax . I havent looked into getting a rod made up i just assumed it would be too expensive any idea how it would cost for that style of rod i'd be using 50lb braid and using the setup for mainly mulloway, sharks, stingrays etc,

thats crazy. I dont see how a rod could cover such a wide casting range. Would have thought it would either not load properly on the lighter weights or not have the balls for the heavier weights. Doesnt sound quite right to me.

ballistic

Thu, 2011-09-08 11:51

cuthbad my ballistic offers the same range, any rod that can cast 10 oz can obviously cast 2oz just doesnt mean its going to do it well.  anything that can cast 10oz must be part brute stick becoause the rod tip will be very strong

Sorry guys but I can't offer

Thu, 2011-09-08 12:05

Sorry guys but I can't offer much advice here, I'm struggling to remember the last time I pulled out a surf-rod, it's not really my game so I haven't spent much time looking / working with the Lemax surf gear.  The dude who runs Carrington Tackle uses the Red Sword and he's stoked with the distance he gets with it... I can't add much more though.

I've got the 12ft Grand Tournament which is a solid rod, I've used it a few times matched with an Ajiking Wahoo and an Emblem Pro and got good distance from it but it wasn't casting big baits / weights.

Cuthbad, regarding the casting weights I've found Lemax tends to either put the whole spectrum of weight you could ever expect to cast with the rod, or the heaviest weight you could ever expect to cast with the rod.  I've found if you focus on the top end and reduce it a bit then you're in the ball park.

BRG, not sure on the rods you're referring to with the Fuji tags but I'd be interested to know more just to double check.  Can you flick me a PM and I'll look into it.

Cheers

LOL - yip, I think I will

Thu, 2011-09-08 17:52

LOL - yip, I think I will stay at home to be on the safe side!!

On the rod issue; of weight casting capabilities - never seen a rod that versatile - yes I will most probably be able to cast a 2 oz with my T 400 broom but you will never get the distance and reel handling & accuracy as expected with a rod that is suited to 2 / 3 / 4 oz weights - there is a reason why you get light, meduim and heavy gear. If you want to be able to chuck such heavies then do a search for rods on those ratings - 8 - 12 oz. I have not seen or found any in Oz, looks like most imported from the UK and South Africa will suite your needs.

I heard via the grape vine they are now testing a "heavy" rod suited for egg beaters in South Africa - might want investigate that - ratings of 8 - 10oz, which means you could still cast a 12oz.

Some rod brands for "Heavies" I found from another site discussing a topic that is quite similiar to this;

Blue Marlin T53 -South Africa Only Brand
Assassin - South Africa Only Brand
Purglas - South Africa manufactured but USA and Australia distributed as well
Century - UK Brand - (my personal fav)
ZZipplex - UK Brand
Sensation - New Rugged III is awesome and they have a new Oval "Blade" rod that will be selling around $300
Elbe
Loomis and Franklin

and I will also add the Shimano 1468 / 10 - it is one of the most underrated rods - have this rod for the past 4 years - awesome; 3 piece 6 - 8oz; cast a 10oz sinker comfortably.

the surf will cast up to 4 or

Thu, 2011-09-08 20:38

the surf will cast up to 4 or 5oz (maybe) plus bait.........might be ok for baitcasting,,,,,,,ask rig...............the ballistic is good for 6 to 8oz lead plus bait

purglass No 3, for 6oz to  8oz lead  plus bait i throw 8oz plus bait far enough

posedian 5 piece is one i also have, its ok..different action,,,try find one 2nd hand if yr lucky,,,,there was one floating round the forums a little while ago for 300,,,suited for an overhead but i throw a beater onto it....

a rod cant do everything..youll have t open yr wallet and have a couple of rods to do different things..........i have a 10-15kg azegai i baitcast with, a 12 loomis for local, the posedian if i want to travel light, tijeralo for calmish conditions and the purglass for punching big lead and bait into heavy seas

you might be able to get a rod made up for 300 but wont be full graphite, will most likely have a single wrap of glass up top and youll get the cheap fujis but still will be ok...........i think pullela has some wicked saffa graphite blanks in store as a mate had a rod built but was round 500plus,,,its  wild rod though

only rod i know that might chuck 8-12oz is a purglass 4 and it would be like a broom stick. i wouldnt bother unless u specificslly want to chuck big leads into big swells but Blou knows of some heavier style blanks.......and i cant see how a rod could COMFORATBLY  throw 2 to 10oz....i think it would not feel good throwing 2oz lead but thats jmoo
