LBG shark rod, what to get???

looking for a very heavy 9-11ft rod for running 80lb to its limit, so far my options are Azusa 24-37kg LBG or a custom United Composites US100 blank 10' 6" with fuji guides ect ect. anyone else know of anything that is in the length im after that can handle 50LB + of drag in a game chair and harness setup mounted to my car?? looking at running a Avet TRX 50 or Jigging Master PE20 with 1800m of PE6 saltiga boat braid and 37kg mono topshot with 400-600lb leaders.

not sure how to go about it or whats going ot be best bang for my buck??

How are you thinking of getting your bait out - with that rig casting will be out of the question.

this will be kayak only with 10kg+ baits up to 1km out. finding a rod over 8ft that can actualy handle that much drag is not easy so if anyone knows or have heard of any rods or blanks capable i would like to know before i spend 1k or more on a rod or settle for the Azusa

I believe that you may be going a little overkill, but then again it sounds as if you are targeting record breakers. Here is a local website with some good advice - http://www.australiasharkfishing.com

 Just wondering why you would

Just wondering why you would need a long rod if not casting the baits out? A shorter rod will help with leverage etc and not break your back.

 personal preferance really

personal preferance really but with baits in the water for 10+ hours thats a lot of time for weed to catch on the line or waves and surge to play around with it so a longer rod in a rod holder monted on my roof rack stops a lot of those problems.

I agree

with Bunny on the leverage side of things. Basics will tell you that the longer the rod the less you will be able to pull.

Try getting a set of scales and see how much you or anyone can pull through a rod, especially one longer than 5ft. Personally I would use a 5.6" stroker rod if you wish to stick it to them.

Good luck anyway.

i used to run 14-18kg of drag on a 13ft rod for 2-3 hour fights so im no stranger to the longer rods and i do understand the extra leverage i just prefer the longer rods and i wouldnt go shorter than 8ft for this but thats just me. just finding it hard to find rods in this class as its to heavy for much else and the south africans still use 13-15ft rods that are to long or amerians use short strokers up to 7ft so im sitting in the middle in what i personaly want

 Extension holder to get that

Mon, 2013-07-29 21:41

Extension holder to get that length?

Anyway a heavy popping rod might work such as the Phenix Titan.

I doubt it will get that much drag though.

There's some 7 foot blanks I found here. They might do the trick if you can perhaps extend the rod holder or if you want extend the butt to get the desired length.

good luck anyway mate, will be keen to see how you get on with this one.

Shorter

Mon, 2013-07-29 22:16

Hi chris I agree with a bunny that a short striker will be so much better for fighting the fish.

My best shark to date on a 10ft live fibre was a 3m tiger on 80lb and that was painful and I wasn't anywhere near full drag.  Obviously your chasing sharks bigger than that and with all due respect I think you might struggle even with a game chair.

it doesn't matter how long your rod is if your going to put baits out that far for 10 hours you will definitely get weed IMO

good luck with the search, you can always try a short stroked as they can be picked up cheap and if you still want longer spend the $$ and go custom

heavy duty rod

Tue, 2013-07-30 05:04

there is a blank made of carbon with heavy walls that may suit what you want. it was imported into WA by the now closed Vic Park tackle and was built up as a custom ordered rod refered to by those who hand braught one as a quobba stick. Rated to handle 24kg it is a 2 piece rod manufactured and sold under the name of lord Pilkington as the catfish blank(no longer made). If you are interested we could meet and I can show you the rod before it goes for a rebuild and then it will be for sale.
