Laugh at yourself - Not as much off an expert as I thought

Now you have to laugh. I have been fishing since I was 4yo, and I have never read any "distructions" on how to use any new reel etc that I have bought. Just stick it on and off you go.

Took my new Saltist lever drag out and hooked into a mackie, and then started to criticise the hell out of Diawa (Normally a Shimano addict). "Bloody thing has no drag, piece of sh#t, give me back the Shimano TLD etc"

Needless to say I packed up the boat and looked at the saltist with disgust once home. Luckily for me it needed some new string, and I couldnt figure out why the drag was so light, only to discover to my embarrasment that I hadnt even seen the drag knob in my haste to use it, I only used the lever.

After some quite contemplation decided to tell the "boss" about this and then had a lot of Sh#t heaped at me for not reading, getting with the times etc, and for being a stupid fool.

Now the saltist is my newe best friend with a fantastic drag etc.

Just shows you that even though I have fished for years I am still a dill, and not an "expert" at anything.

Just have to laugh at yourself.

Has anyone else had silly embarrashing things like this happen to them.

good one mate. i think we have all done something stupid like that. once i left it in free spool when the line was on the bottom and put the rod in the holder only to see line dissapearing fast off the reel, as we were drifting you could just imagine and when a fish had taken the bait with so much line out it went straight into the reef. got most of it back minus the fish. all up about 300mtrs were out and we were fishing in 40mtrs of water

Yeah, i've left a reel in freespool once while trolling. Geez 300m takes a long time to wind back in on a calcutta.

Neels, didnt the TLD have the exact same knob in the same location for the same purpose? :p

Sounder

Tue, 2010-08-31 10:03

Read a bit in the paper years back about a mob who went fishing off Exmouth years back in their completely new boat and for the first 3 days came back in empty handed despite the sounder showing good bottom and fish every time.

On the forth day they took the kids out in the gulf and it was quiet as usuall. After an hour or so and being bored the youngest kid spent time watching the sounder and after a bit was telling what was going to come up next. Big fish, little rock, two fish, little rock etc and this would be repeated each 3 minutes!!!, the penny finally dropped that it was in test/display mode , the same as they had been watching on the previous days.

Beach fishing years back when it was the usual thing to sleep on the beach next to the fire with a rod set and the ratchet on supposedly to wake you up if it took off. A mate asleep with a deep spool Alvey loaded with 1000metres of 30lb set with a full herring on.

I thought I heard a slow clicking and promptly went back to sleep only to wake up an hour later in need of a leak to hear the clicking again. Shone the torch at his reel only to see that there was less than 50 metres of line left. On waking him he went crook blaming me and the others of deliberately letting it go.Took nearly and hour to finally get his rig back in with a port jackson shark about 3 foot long as the culprit plus a mound of weed that had been carried outwith the current.

How many people have decided they don't need to read the instructions and regretted it. I know I do all of the time.

Hook covers

Tue, 2010-08-31 16:20

Was chasing salmon down at Hamelin bay when I did a rifle shot with a lure while casting[ line round the rod tip]. Took a new chromie from out of its wrapper, tied it on and back fishing again.

After about a dozen casts and pulling the lure right through the school each time with plenty of strikes and no hook ups I decided to have a look at the terbles---complete with their plastic safety cover still in place. Mate Rod was busting himself laughing from watching after not hooking up and waiting to see how long it would take before I  had a look.

I better add another then which is similar

Tue, 2010-08-31 17:52

Saw a school off Cobes about a month back. Remembered that R2S Trihos in yellow/silver is awesome for them.

Tied on on in haste with a mono fluoro leader replacing the Laser Pro with single strand. Chucked it over board in a rush. Hit, Hit, Hit ....?

No hook ups. Oops up she came with the elstic band nicely securing the sets of razor sharp trebles together. Laughed, undid them, cast and bang, great batlle with cobia.

Wont forget that stupidity in a rush either.

Now I am wondering whether there is a pattern forming here!!!!

Lol I did the same sort of thing once Neels

Tue, 2010-08-31 18:42

I was throwing a metal lure of the beach and getting a few hits and they weren't hooking up. Then I noticed that I hadn't removed the green plastic covering the manufacturer had put on the trebles.
