landcruiser 200 catch can after 20,000km
Thought this might be of interest to other 200s owners
I bought a new 200s late last year - my last 200 didn't have a catch can on and I wasn't going to bother putting one on the new one but the dealer actually suggested it wouldn't be a bad idea - I bought a HPD catch can as I liked the idea of the dipstick (meaning you don't have to pull the whole unit it out to check if its got oil in it)
At 10,000 km there was nothing showing on the dipstick (although it does not go right to the bottom of the can), car is about to go in for its 20,000 service and this is what was in the can - more so, of interest there was a fair bit of sludge at the bottom that clearly had moisture in it - must be from short trips but good to see that non of that is going through the turbos

Yeah that is interesting,
Yeah that is interesting, probably won’t have our 200 much longer though.
Once I get my 100 on the road the missus can downsize a little.
There may be some resistance to that plan

its a pretty average design
its a pretty average design flaw really, it appears to be a well known issue with the 200s that the manifolds clog up with out a catch can - my last 200 at 150k's showed no signs of performance issues but did blow a bag of smoke if you gassed it - assume that's why

Ive an 07 Triton, they were known for going into limp mode due to the sensor position and the new recycling system used on the turbo diesels....i was lucky and had the manifolds cleaned while still under warranty...installed a catch can straight after that, but i don't get a build up like that.
Maybe its the run in oil used for the first period, might be different after 20,000 service....keep an eye on that for sure.

That has collected about the
That has collected about the same amount of oil as mine did after installing HPD catch can for 20,000kms.

the first 10,000 it didn't
the first 10,000 it didn't seem to have any in it (although as said, the dipstick on catch can does not reach the bottom so it might have) the car did use a bit of oil however on the (engine) dipstick. From 10k to 20 it has not used any oil at all.
It does do short run city driving Monday to Friday but it goes Perth to Dunsborough every 4 weeks and a couple of Exmouth/Karratha trips a year - THe car has a DFP gauge and i do notice that the dunsb trips clear that out

Well your saving yourself
Well your saving yourself some pain down the track by not having that shit go through your manifold. Unbelievable how much carbon builds up in the manifold over time, Good investment.
Keep any eye out for soot buildup in your exhaust, seems afew are having dpf problems, not just hilux.

I think you will find
That the problem of “sludge” or black sticky stuff in the intake, is all EGR related (exhaust has recirculating valve)
The ultimate is to have the egr deleted, with a catch can also fitted to trap the oil vapour. Oil vapour also means uncontrolled burn, running on of engines, potentially detonation in the cylinders (pinging) etc etc. in summary, 200 series are hard to cure the black sludge in the intake pipes (like all common rail diesels) but it can be done with a bit of homework.

the DFP filter is pretty
the DFP filter is pretty amazing (until it is not I guess!) I can run my finger through the inside of the tailpipe and it comes out clean - I think the longer runs help keep the DFP from clogging up - understand there were issues with the earlier (DFP) models but so far so good.....

200-300ml per 10,000
I have the DPF model 200 and get between 200-300ml of oil in the catch can over a 10,000km period. I thought this was excessive after looking on LCOOL its pretty normal and not excessive at all.
at 5,000kms I deleted the EGR, DPF and installed a catch can. Its now done close to 50,000 and I opened up the intake to have a look and it was reasonably clean. I know there is no way it would be that clean if I hadn't done the mods.

thanks Piggy, I have read so
thanks Piggy, I have read so many conflicting arguments about deleting the EGR - the DPF is a little less hard to argue!
at this stage I am prob going to keep stock - my last 200 (pre DPF) had high flow cats going into a single 3.75in pipe with no mufflers - it was not actually that loud until you planted it - or towed a boat to exy in S4........ I don't miss that sound!

year
What year is yours? Is it still under warranty?
I am a diesel mechanic so the cleanliness of the engine, better performance and better fuel economy out weighed the shitty Toyota warranty anyway so I did it as soon as I could.
Towing my 3 tonne boat my cruiser has way more power, and better fuel economy. I dropped 6 litres per 100kms when towing the boat doing the mods. but I have a heavy foot

howdy - my current one is
howdy - my current one is 2018, my previous one (with the exhaust mods) was 2010
The new one has a swag more power than the old - which suggests that yes it prob had clogged manifolds - hence the smoke under load
One thing I have really noticed on the 2018 is the power switch actually makes a big difference to throttle response - especially off the mark

Not sure Pete
I know they had recalls on the Hilux for DPF issues but unsure if this is what you were referring to.

Needed
what does the catch can do, and is it worth installing on a 2014 lc200?
who installs them and how much does it cost?

Separates oil from crankcase vent
Prevents biuld up of crud in inlet manifold, I run one on my 200 and have the EGR valve closed in the tune. HPD $385 fit it ypurself.

If you are going to fit on
If you are going to fit on get the intake cleaned prior to fitting. Toyotune at Kenwick will sort you and use the HPD units.

Took my cruiser to Toyotune
Took my cruiser to Toyotune to get the transfer case fixed as it was leaking oil due to a blocked breather from going through mud out in the desert. I decided that i am going to keep this one as im not keen on the DPF models so decided the get the manifolds cleaned and ended up coming out with a remap, 3 inch exhaust, erg blocked, torque converter lock up kit and remapper on the tranny and dyno tuned. Got an extra 60hp out of it. It goes pretty f***en good now for pretty much the same fuel consumption.

It's amazing what can be done
It's amazing what can be done to them. After Alan worked over mine I got the same sort of results and better economy. Recent holiday was 7000kms and averaged 15.5ltrs per 100kms. Pretty happy with that for a 3800kg car and plenty of get up and go to boot.
