Land based fish care with no ice

Just interested to know how everyone looks after their caught fish when fishing landbased and have no esky full of ice to store then in. How long would you keep a fish before needing to get it on ice? Planning an overnight trip and trying to figure out what the plan would be if we get a decent fish that we would want to bring home.

Wet hessian sack?

Tue, 2014-03-18 21:27

That's how the old boys on the boats used to do it before ice and esky. Keep out of sun and keep wetting so the evaporation keeps it cool.

Yeah I was thinking of a rockpool or something but is there any risk of the fish degrading once dead in water? How long would be too long to leave it? Obviously not planning on keeping a fish overnight but if caught first thing in the morning and we wouldn't be back to ice/esky till arvo what are the options if the fish was kept.

When up at Quobba some of the fish we caught didn't get iced for a good 6+ hours as ice just isn't a posibility at some locations. Just find a clean rockpool and keep the fish in it out of the sun. Other option is a hessian sack left in the water. Just don't make the mistake I did and leave it where the tide rises a lot... had to dive blind into a 4m+ deep rockpool to fetch my bloody cobia back lol!

fish bags

Wed, 2014-03-19 10:00

I have a couple of those fish bags that fold up to a reasonable size so if you dont get a big one you wont need to get it out.  Worked great a few times on the boat when we have cleaned up on good size macks as the will fit fish 1.5m long, they need a little bit of ice though.  Leemo off hear was using them at quaobba as its an easy way to carry macks back across a bit of terrain

otherwise as others have said the hessian sacks kept wet are a proven way

Similar to the hessian sack I use an old pair of jeans. Just cut the legs off. They hold a heap of water when wet so stays nice and cool when there is a breeze. Seems to work quite well with tailor if I catch a couple keepers early in a night.

You can also tie them off To prevent flys, crabs, birds, etc getting into it.
