Know your bag limits

Katsy 85s post about closed seasons reminded me of this.

A couple of months ago i was drift fishing & caught a double header of swallowtail on the first drop, hooked within seconds of the bait hitting the bottom. I sometimes dont worry about swallowtail because they are usually very small. These were both a good size though & those who have eaten them will know they are pretty good on the tooth.

So I gleefully stashed them in the ice box. 20 minutes later a fisheries boat turns up. (first time thats happened to me out on the water) Theres a young lady standing on the bow asking me about equipment etc then asks what fish I'v caught. so I hold up the swallowtaail. "Nice" she says "better go & catch some skippy now" "Skippy? -No way" I replied. "I going to catch a Dhuie"

Then she reminded me that I had my bag limit already. Two fish from the group - including swallowtail. Lucky for me i had not caught anything else. I'm very careful & respectfull of bag & size limits but that one got past me. A man's got to know his limits.

Upgrading?

Sun, 2012-06-03 13:36

Can only have one Dhuie & one other from the group or two non Dhuies from the group. I dont upgrade so my demersal fishing that day effectively ended 2 seconds after i started fishing.

I really dont understand why Swallow tail are a high risk species... they're in plagues in some places...

Daily limits are fairly simple but for extended trips i still have to scratch my head to make sure were not over with regards to landing Whole/Trunked/Filleted fish. Two days no worries but 3+ things start getting more complex.

when we do a long trip to the islands etc and catch some Dhuies, a Fisheries person told us that even if your out for a multiple day trip, you can only have 2 onboard. I dont believe it mentions this in the brochures. Further though, if you (say) land your fish on the islands legally then transport to shore under the 10kg possession limit rule, this still applies.

How I dont know as you can skin and freeze your fish and hence be unidentifiable once landed, and there is no "dhuie restriction" on your 10 (20?)kg fish limit ashore etc. Nowhere in writing have I seen reference to different rules for the possession limit if transported onshore or by sea.

A less cynical person would probably conclude that these interpretations are made up as they go.

Red, swallowtail, etc, doesnt matter. They're all centroberyx species which are 2 daily bag limit.

as a tourist to your neck of the woods of the past five years i reckon your bag limits and closed seasons have improved your or mostly my catch rates of demersals, for all i ever caught were samsons which were my desired species anyway, and i caught my dhuie after your closed season restrictions, i reckon if you mob keep this up your demersal fishery will be awsome

Its a good point you make.

Its a good point you make. Doesnt mean you cant go out and catch a dhue, you'll just have to release it. Nothing wrong with that

Except that it will more than likely die. What gives me the S%^&# is that we all pay a licence to fish yet if there are 3 on board you can only take 2 Dhu the other licence holder who has paid his money isnt allowed to take. The dhuie boat limit sux ,we seem to catch more Dhu than any other fish and find this the most frustrating rule. i would be happy to go home with 3 dhu and nothing else instead of returning them to sea and hoping they live while you keep fishing for a species you are allowed to keep whilst catching and releasing more dhu that might or might not survive. i fish for a feed cause i love fish catching and releasing demersals isnt good for the species and as soon as i have enough for a feed on board i head in.Just to keep it in perspective i fish out of Bunno where pelagics are non existent and the miles you have to travel are quite long. Anyway just my 2 cents worth.
