To the reel...
or to mono, not to sure about others but I pack my reels with mono first, then only put a couple of hundred metres of braid to fill up the reel, this allows maximum cranking.

Braid
Will slip if tied straight to the spool apparently bit of electrical tape around the spool is another option I have used this to fit braid directly to the spool. As for the knot I usually do a uni knot to tie on to the spool I don't no if it's the best knot bit I have never got to the bottom of the spool to find out how it holds.

Back to back uni or short double
to attach mono to the braid - that was what I saw the tackle shop do and have had fish take me back to the mono and never had any problems but there are some really complex and in my view as an old codger some bloody difficult but really good knots the younger members excel in and good on em for having the patience to learn them

knots
To attach braid to mono get someone to show you how to tie a Bimini Twist and a GT knot , I have just learned how to tie it. I used to use uni and double uni knots, not anymore.

I think for attaching braid to the spool
via a short lenght off Mono Bimini is overkill. The mono "grip" the spool and stops the slip you get with braid. When braid first came out, heaps off people complained that the reels drag was slipping, because the whole braid on the spool would slip. This was then blamed on the drag.
I use about 10m off Mono, back to back Uni, trim the tags close to prevent line "catching" on the knot if you ever get that low. As for Mono to spool, almost any slip knot will do, because IMO this knot is just to grip the spool, not to prevent a break if you get spooled (its basically done if you get there). I do use a Uni, but certainly dont expect that to hold a fish when spooled, as the system is going to give somewhere anyway in that scenario.
I dont like knots in the middle of my mainline so never have a long backing of mono. This creates another weak point in the line. I either spool with Mono through, or braid (with short mono) through despite the price.

Have a check under forums on this site or do a search alot of what ya asking about has been answered before. I normally try a knot a few times do a breaking strain test than head out fishén

Strong mono on the spool
Strong mono on the spool joined to braid for casting, strength and more line on the spool then leader stronger than mono on the spool all joined by the uni knot. This knot works on braid ranging from 2lb up to 50lb and joins mono to braid with just as much ease and efficiency.

If it gets to the spool
Mate if you hook a fish that is strong enough to get down to the knot on the spool, it won't matter what knot you tie the fish will win the fight! Ping!

knot that it matters
The knot to the spool doesn't need to be too special--if the strength of the knot to the spool becomes critical it is too late and the type of knot isn't going to save you from beeing spooled. It is possible to spool braid straight onto a spool and not have it slip--apparently if you are doing this it is good practice to make a few wraps in the other direction before tying off, but using electrical tape or coban/flex-wrap (self-adhering bandage) on the spool first will also prevent slip issues and is probably easier and more fool proof. As suggested above mono backing also performs a spool grip enhancing function and can help fill the spool if you don't want to put as much braid on.
