Just a quick question.

Down at my local lake there is thousands of these little fish i have been catching for my barras, thought they were tadpoles but got them home and they look exactly like baby guppies

question is, can guppies survive in a lake or would it get too cold? or is it some sort of other feeder fish, will try get a photo of them to post up.

Troy, they are most likely a fish called gambusia. They were quite common in some aqaurium shops as feeder fish. If you are catching them yourself be mindful that the water you are getting them from isn't polluted as you might end up killing your own fish.

They are gambusia and are a noxious species, mainly put into the ponds and lakes for mosquito control, they are very agressive compared to guppies, "They will easily destroy a freshwater eco system"

Feeder fish from aquarium

Tue, 2011-12-27 12:31

Feeder fish from aquarium stores are often gambusias caught from ponds anyway. However I think this has been banned now.

You can quarantine them in a seperate tank fora while with clean water. This will be less risky than putting them straight in.

BTW.. Feeding tadpole to barra would not have been good. You can get in a lot of trouble as they are important for frog numbers.
