Joiner knot enquiry

 Hello fellas,

I know this has been done a lot on this site but after searching and sifting through the archives and YouTube I'm still in need of solid answers, please help of you can.

ok so I'm soon to be loading up my heavier reel (fin nor offshore ) with around 50lb braid (maybe 40lb)

I will be wanting to use heavy mono trace e.g 60,80lb maybe 100lb if I feel ambitious

I like the GT knot, now does this require a Bimini? As in can I get away with just doubling over the braid?

i also like the FG knot, I'm sure but not certain that this doesn't require a Bimini and its just line to line, no double,

also is the sebile knot any good? I've read somewhere that it's a minor variation of the FG.

which one will be better suited to the larger difference of diameters?

knots will be cast from shore with reasonable weight and be used for my spinning gear also (15lb braid to 40lb mono)

reason I'm asking is I read a lot about connecting similar diameters but there trace and braid are far from similar,

appolgies if its been asked, and thank you in advance

gt does require bimini. my favourite thing about the gt is it holds really well even if you stuff it up slightly eg when your in a rush. might sound strange but ive landed some reasonable fish with the knot looking pretty hagged.

Thanks guys, and these are both ok for fairly different diameter lines? Because casting with improved Albright and double uni , my guides not like it

 As said, gt knot requires

Wed, 2013-09-25 09:21

As said, gt knot requires Bimini. As for FG knot and sebile knot once tightened up are the same thing. They are tied with different methods but the end result is the same. I tie the fg my own way because I struggled with the methods I found on YouTube. I also spent an afternoon doing different knots and the testing them on a scale. I found the fg to be a lot stronger than the gt knot but that might be just the way I tie them. Both knots are the perfect knot for joining 50lb braid to bigger leader like 80-100lb. Your best bet is to practice at home and test your knots and be confident you can tie it over and over again.

Hope that helps,

Grant

 fg knot before you start

Wed, 2013-09-25 11:15

fg knot before you start fishing then i go to gt if i get busted off heaps quicker for me to tie a bimini and gt than a FG

both are great knots when fishing for snapper and dhuies and tailore for that matter  iuse 15lb line and 40lb leader using the method above never had a knot fail all this crap about this knot steonger

than that knot is a load of bull it only matters if you want to lock up your drag and skull drag fish in, i have caught 40+ kg tuna on a gt knot and fg knot no problem at all i would say go 40lb braid cause its nice and thin and casts a lot longer and unless your targetting sharks i wouldnt use any more than 60lb leader possibly 80 at the absolute max

what are you targeting byu the way?

Thanx guys you have answers my questions perfectly! I just couldn't seem to find the ansews I needed amongst the searches I did, so much appreciated,

bitten, it will go on my fin nor offshore and will be chasing mainly mulloway and small shark, lb snapper and such but may also from time to time be used on a boat rod out bottom bashing down Warpole way, and when I get my new spin reel and load it up with 15lb that'll be for bonito, salmon, tailor and hopefully some bigger by catches

Thanx again,

happy to here more opinions though haha

the gt knot doesnt cast as

Wed, 2013-09-25 15:13

the gt knot doesnt cast as nicely as the fg or pr knots, at least with the way i tie it. Some times i wont have as long leader for that reason so i can cast without the knot passing the guides, though its only really an issue when your tying on heavy leaders 60lb+

Sebile knot. Pretty easy to

Wed, 2013-09-25 18:28

Sebile knot. Pretty easy to tie after a few goes and is slim as, good for casting. Have used it for 30lb braid to 60lb mono, max drag and all, didnt fail.

But the sebile leaves a tag

Wed, 2013-09-25 19:21

But the sebile leaves a tag facing toward the reel, how does that go coming back through the guides under loads?

yeh its a bit of a trade off,

yeh its a bit of a trade off, sometimes when winding back in it can stick a little with heavier line, but the opposite (tag facing out) is ALWAYS poo for casting
