Jigging Rod and Reel recomendations
Submitted by Aaron Santos on Wed, 2012-06-27 09:12
Hi all,
I have slowly been getting into the jigging game for demersals using my botttom bashing gear. with a little success of a couple of small dhueys on the last couple of outtings, Im looking at getting a set up just for jigging. Dont want to go too over board just yet as Im still a beginner in this game but want to spend around the $350 - 400(thanks to Birthday Vouchers). with that I would like to get rod, reel and braid if possible. Can you jigging pro's please give me some advice on what to buy, including braid strength and brand.
All advice greatly appreciated.
Thanks

You might struggle a bit to
You might struggle a bit to get a setup for that, but certainly not impossible (particularly if you added the braid separate).
If it was me I would look at the following:
Reel:
Probably something like the stradic would be ideal. 4000 or 5000 depending on how heavy you like your reels. I'd run 20lb for the 4000 and you could run 30lb on the 5000?
Daiwa make some equivalent models (but I forget all the new names). I'd go the 4000 size (but the 3000s are lighter if you want to run 20lb). There are also Pfleuger and Okuma options. TBH, you're best going into a good tackle store (Oceanside or Allboats are good) and matching the combo. So pick your rod, then get a reel to match. On reels, you can play around with a few and see what feels best for you. Around $200 should get you something reasonable and suitable (as long as you dont thrash it),
Rod: Jigging Master Saber Game ($215 from Oceanside - I forget if thats pre or post FW discount ;) )
There should be a few other options, but I'm not quite sure what they are off the top of my head. Perhaps some others can recommend.
The Eupro salty fighters are nice rods and under $200, but personally I feel that they are just a little on the light end for demersal jigging, as they dont really allow you to run up to 150g jigs effectively and have just a little less stopping power than some of the 'soft' PE3 rods (like the jigforce or saber game).
Line: I think Daiwa Tournament accudepth (metered) is the best braid you can get for light jigging (under 30lb). Its this one: http://www.rayannes.com.au/daiwa-shimano-reels-australia/line-braid/braid/daiwa-tournament-8-accudepth-hyper-pe-braid/
Its not the saltiga hyper version which is awesome (but expensive). You can get the line from Allboats. I think its round about $80 a spool for 300m? Go 20, 25 or 30lb. Its smooooth and thin (and colour metered!). There are other options for cheaper braids though. The daiwa shinobi braid is reasonable but not colour metered and not that smooth. Fairly cheap though (I think I have a spare spool if you want even cheaper as I proably wont use it as I got it for a backup).

It's not all the bling you might see in some guys kit, but it will knock over most of the stuff you get in the Metro area.
The shop is based in Adelaide and does on line orders with postage, I'll stay away from naming them but they're pretty easy to find through Google.
Maybe one of the local guys can do a better price.

cheers guys,
I ended up getting a little excited and bought the stradic 4000FJ with a shimano T-curve revolution rod. I spent the extra with the braid and got the daiwa tournament like you suggested Hlokk. got the whole 300m with backing on the reel so now im ready to test it out and work on my jigging skills. Bring on saturday cant wait to get out there.
cheer again for the advice.
