Inside a snapper's guts

Hey guys

I caught this snapper last night out on the 3 mile. Went about 7kg.

Anyway, while cleaning I checked out is stomach contents as per usual. I found a beak, which looked like a squid or cuttlfish beak. But it was bloody huge. Only just a bit smaller than a golf ball.

How big must the squid or cuttly have been to have a beak that big?

Cheers

Brad

Queen snapper

When you catch a queen snapper go through its stomach contents because they usually contain small shells not normally found on beaches etc that can be worth keeping for a collector.

Big cuttle fish

Sun, 2011-10-09 21:42

Yeah that would be a big cuttle fish,  I have seen them about the same size ( golf ball ) from a cuttle fish aprox 6 to 7kg.

I have caught quite a few pinkies from the sound that had leafy sea dragons in there gut's.

Nice fish you got too.

Cheers Grant

Would be a reasonable size

Would be a reasonable size cuttly, but not an absolute monster in order to have big beaks. Most of their beaks are hidden inside their mouth so only a small amount protrudes when they're alive. One with a body about the size of a football wouldnt have a problem having beaks that big. Of course, I doubt the snapper ate it whole :p A few could take big chunks/nibbles from a dead cuttlie no probs though.

I had a dhuie cough up an pearly abalone type shell once. Also had dhuies cough up bits of cray or a sea urchin (which wasnt fun as it was crunching it in its mouth and it went on the deck). One had a cray feeler sticking out its throat :p Random bits of fish, squid, etc, as per usual. I remember one had three diff types of food in its gob. Of course, the best one was someone elses rig from the previous drift, haha.

Why do you say that? You don't think it looks like 7kg?
