Info wanted on Avet reel - SX in particular

Hi guys was just wondering if anyone owns an Avet SX.

Am looking at getting one for landbased PE 3 live baiting reel with my tax return.

A bit of info on their casting abilities would be very much appreciated.

Also , who stocks avet ?

hey Flangies .. i dont know a hell of a lot about the avets but ive used a few of my friends . just not sure what models . ive seen them for sale down south here at "whitties" in bunbury. i had a good look at a few a few months ago to use as a general pe 3-4 dhufish reel but i found them to be a little lacking. id also sugest the jigging master reels at oceanside or a shimano talic 8 is your after something light but strong. the only problem with the JM gear is the slower retrieve.

How do the Talics and Jigging masters cast ?

I'm new to O/H department and was under the impression they weren't for casting but will consider them if i can use them landbased (surf included)

Slower gearing can be good to fight fish so i dont mind.  I rarely get out on any boats so it pretty much will be just landbased.

Avet have just released the

Avet have just released the cast control on there range of reels. Which involves a casting magnet. Heard penty of people use them off the beach. There are also plenty of people that "mag" there normal avets too. One of only a few lever drag reels good for casting. I prefer the star drags as you can get a "true" freespool which is better for distance casting. I rescently bought a penn torque 100. Yet to use it but if its anything like the penn 525 i had it will be awesome.

I wouldnt use a shimano talica off the beach as it has no cast control. Not good for someone learning as the cast control is in your thumb. The shinano torsa does (lever drag) and the shimano trinidad does if your looking at a star drag. Both reels are a fair bit more pricey than the avet.

Cant comment on the jigging master but.

I actually own the Avet SC

Sun, 2010-06-20 08:13

I actually own the Avet SC 6/4 MC, thats a two speed, with magnetic cast control. It was my jigger till I got a Talica TAC8 and now its used an an 8kg troller. They are used extensively in the US by the surf bass fisherman because they are easy to service (now that I know how it works), bearings are cheap ($25US a set from Avet direct). They're used for casting big baits and big weights and the mag-based cast control helps for that.

Shimano claim that the talica is for casting unweighted livebait sardines for tuna. It has no cast control, none at all.

I found the JM retrieve annoying on their PE4 model, it has a loooong handle and does only 60cm per rev, and because of the long handle, its hard to spin it fast. The Avet does 90cmish IIRC and the Talica TAC8 does 95cmish.

Sun, 2010-06-20 10:58

Thanks guys after reading this and a bit of google/youtube (theres HEAPS on youtube) it looks like i'm going to get an avet.

If i cant find them locally they are pretty cheap at the moment with an SX delivered for 200 Aus.

I really do like that bling look to them aswell, beats the old saltist and torium look that has been done to death and every man and his dog has one.

Abu

Sun, 2010-06-20 14:22

Have a look at an Abu 7000, they have a reasonable line capacity, line leveller and a casting brake. Have uesd one for years and have caught samsons, salmon, pinkies and even big mulloway with them off the beach and rocks. With a bit of practice like everything you can cast ling distance with them.

Its a shame the 7000s big brother, the 10,000ca stopped being produced years back, they had auto 2 speed and a wider spool

Sun, 2010-06-20 14:43

The SX doesnt have a great deal of drag, about 9lb at strike and 14lb on full. The comment about the MC version is right about a big difference between the two reels. There is also the SX Raptor which has a much bigger drag and a cast control at almost twice the price(?)

They are a very small reel around the same size as a 20 size Daiwa. The SX and the SX MC are really 20-30lb reels at most where as the SX Raptor is more of a 30-40lb reel.

I think you can get a little

Sun, 2010-06-20 14:48

I think you can get a little more drag out than than 14lb and still have freespool. Mine was ok when set to 20lb max with greased drags, but that was at the end of it's limit - no real problem fishing 30lb.

The SX Raptor is silly. No idea why they still call it the SX when the line capacity is larger than the original SX. It may make a nice 50lb reel, but it sure ain't no 30lb reel any longer.

That, or a Daiwa 7HT mag.

The Penn TRQ100 is on closeout in the US, but thats a big reel and you would need a lot of backing.

Don't forget that a larger reel usually casts worse than a small reel.

I probably should've said bigger, IIRC the penn is about 450g, the avet 400g and the daiwa is under 350g

I haven't bagged anything better than a 12kg dhufish on it yet, but it was super-smooth and knocked that off fine.
