I'm having a lot of trouble deciding high gear vs low gear, someone please help!!! I'm loosing sleep.

Hey guys I need some advice on a reel purchase. Someone with knowledge about gear ratios, retrieves and cm per handle crank is needed right here!!
......................................................................

Hey guys I recently sold a saltiga 5000 low speed model. I had intentions for it to spin for bluefin off the rocks (once a year) and also to use it as a livebaiting reel off sydney wharves and flick big lures for reefies on up north and such but mind you these are once a year expeditions.... I sold it because I was told here it was way to slow to try even spin for my upcoming trip spinning for bluefin and thought about getting a 4500 (low speed) , however the 5000 had a ratio of 4.1 I believe and the 4500 has a ratio of 4.8 - 1. Which in my books isn't too slow and on the medium level between torque and speed. Where as the 5000 which I was told was "ALL TORQUE and power"

However On another forum someone has recently told me there isn't much difference in CM per crank of handle on both models? So what is the whole "4.8 to 1" really mean ? As im a bit confused now.

I think personally the 4500 low speed would be a better option for me as these trips I do needing the higher speed is honestly once a year thing and not to mention , when longtail are around it's not like they like a super fast retrieve anyway when they are cruising past the rock ledge.

As for spool capacity goes.. the 4500/5000 spools are interchangeable too. I plan to buy a 5000 spool for it to run 50lb braid for when im using it up north with big plastics and jigging.

In short guys I really wanted a reel that had a "medium" gear ratio. And this is what I'm really after , to do both applications.

1. Spinning once a year for 3 days. (I've heard longtail don't like a super fast retrieve?) Im heading next month!!! but don't want to loose a hookup because im too slow with my stickbaits that I've purchased for them ???
2. Livebaiting for kings off Sydney wharves/ Beach Jewies and sharks.  (alot of pylons near our wharves , gotta get them bloody quick!!!)
3. Big Plastics for reefies in weipa
4. Slow rolling big hardbodies off breakwalls for jewfish. and sending out a squid unweighted
5. trolling around weipa with big hardbodies.
6. Heading to harvey bay ( I have a branzino 3000 for the boat , but for landbased off the pier I have a 10 foot stick and would like to target some queenies off their and try my luck? maybe spinning ??? )

And 4.8 seems on a great level for my applications (I think????)... However been told the 5000 with the 4.1 ratio has a couple of Centremetres difference in per crank of handle??? how is this possible??
There MUST be a difference, because if there was just a couple of centremetres per crank difference why would daiwa still sell the 4500? The 5000 is the same body with a bigger spool? I don't see the point!!! Daiwa wouldn't do such a thing and waste the money!?

And not to mention They also have a 4500 RCS spool which is very expensive an a blingy upgrade for the 4500, but however you can get a 5000 RCS spool which can fit the 4500 and have more capacity? Is this just a size thing as it is weight difference or probly balances better on a lighter rod with the 4500 rcs spool?

I probly have should of researched more before selling it!!! Now I'm very confused with what to do and what option to take?

Someone just make up my mind for me.. My obsessive compulsive disorder is going out of CONTROL!! ahhh!!!
I have 4 weeks left till my 3 day trip chasing longtails off the rocks with my selection of stickbaits ready to rock and roll!!!

4.8 to 1

3 to 1

5 to 1

ect ect ect . the spool being the first and the handle being the second , so working on the 4.8 to 1 ratio for every full turn of the reels handle the spool will do 4.8 rotations

Two different reels with the same ratio can have different amount of line retrieval per crank, different size spools and/or different amounts of line on the spool will change it

hence why im having so much trouble deciding....

the main main things is the spinning for longtail for 3 days. and the rest is bassically nearly everynight is slow rolling hardbodies and sending out big squid for jewfish landbased. and an upcoming trip to weipa to flick plastics for reefies, smallish / medium gts and big spanishing trolling....

at 95cm per crank on the low gear... is that a respectable amount to be casting lures all day at longtail and reefies and rolling n sydney all night?

It's not just you with the OCD....lol
it's just impossible to get one reel to do everything perfectly.
I don't think you are "going to loose a hookup because of the low speed" you are just going to have to work harder to get the stickbait working at the speed you want it.

95cm/ crank is OK for stickbaiting but 131cm p crank is better (easier)

link below shows all the ratios and retrieve per crank of the saltigas.

to put it in perspective
4.1:1 is very low ratio for power jigging etc
4.8:1 is middle of the range
5.7 is high ratio for stickbait poppers, chasing sails etc.

FWIW: I think the saltiga 4500H is what you are after seeing as the majority of your fishing is throwing lures and trolling.

All comes down to diameter of the spool versus gear ratio. In general ignore both and consentrate on cm/retrieve. 90-110cm per retrieve I find is good allround. 120 plus for poppers/stickbaits and 80-90 for jigging.

The only real reason to look at gear ratio is that a lower gear means more torque.

Plus one for line retrieved

Mon, 2014-03-03 19:33

Plus one for line retrieved per crank as opposed to gear ratio... I replaced two reels, one has a retrieval of 81cm per crank (for soft plastics and bait fishing) and the other 110cm for poppers and metals etc. I got a stellar that retrieved 95cm and does both jobs very well on the same rod.
