Long Point - Trumpeter

Thu, 2010-01-07 15:16

If there are Trumpeter there the chances are there are Mulloway around also. Long Point has always fished pretty well over the years for many species.

Have your tried setting big burley trail out and targeting Herring and Gar? They are great fun and provide a nice feed.

Whiting will bite in a burley trail I can assure you. Try worms, tiny bits of prawn etc. Where I fish NOR the Whiting become a pest they are that active.

Be patient. Us old buggers still enjoy a good Tailor session and fill in the gaps with other species by being a bit creative.

The whiting love it according to my mate Sherbs (He certainly catches a few of them).

Yeah Matt is spot on

It takes a lot of hard work and a bit of luck to continue to catch good fish from the land in the Perth metro area.
Sherbs and I had a crack last night at a spot where there had been good tailor and hardly got a bite in four hours. But we'll be back and having another go soon.

Trumpeters

Thu, 2010-01-07 16:14

I was going to put this up in a different post, but since it was raised here, this looks like the spot.  I have been doing quite a bit of snorkelling for crabs over the christmas break in cockburn sound/carnac/garden Island.  One thing I have noticed is absolutely massive herds of trumpeter, yellowtail and blowies.

I have dived these areas before in years gone by and have never seen anything like it before.  I have seen a few schools of herring in the sound too, but fishing with a floating burley cage, 40-60cm leader to a longshank hook with squid/prawn/bloodworm sp over weedy areas is a pain in the arse as the trumpeters/yellowtail and blowies would hammer them. Particularly the trumpeters because as soon as they hook up, they head straight for the weed and generally snag you up.

Also caught some fish, photos to come when I manage to get the camera back, that were a pale goldy color with black/brown wide vertical bars and a tail shaped like a trout and also trout-esque brown/black spots in the last 1/4 of the body.  Probably around 25-30cms, does this sound like a salmon trout?

Anyone else notice this?

Trumpeter

Stick out a live trumpeter on a big rod while you're trying for whiting, herring on the smaller gear. They make a great live bait and mulloway love them

the heads floating around

Thu, 2010-01-07 16:27

the heads floating around is the pink snapper smashing the fish they miss the heads went for a dive and saw the action the snapper would hit the blowys to only there tail tho smart fish so im pritty shore its snapper. and for the fish you dont quit know from what your saying it sounds like a salmon trout or a small salmon but they normaly hang around in big or little schools but im not 100% becouse of the coulers suck as brown and black they should be a nice silver with yellow spots and a couple of stipes.

I've caught my fair share of Trumps while chasing gardies and herring and find like the blowies, they usually take the bait at a slightly lower depth than gardies and herring.

Try a floating rig and adjust the length of the trace to see if you can get some different results.

try a running sinker rig if

Thu, 2010-01-07 16:39

try a running sinker rig if you want to catch the whiting, then the bait is on the bottom.

If your using a paternoster rig the bait is not in the whiting zone (on the ground).

Try that and mix up the bait - lamb hearts and worms are good, as well as tiny bits of prawns, all as mentioned.

Kepp at it!
