Identifying Great White Shark (Video)
Submitted by K_willo on Wed, 2012-06-20 19:29
Another steep point video, after going through all the our footage i came across this clip filmed from the boat with a contour on a pole.
We had a couple of sharks circling the boat so we chucked the camera in to film, we assumed they were more whalers..
The second shark, to me looks very much like a white.

Grey reefie
I can see where you're coming from, but I would call it for a reasonably solid grey reef shark. That two tone colouration is very grey reef like and the pecs and dorsal fin aren't meaty enough for a white. It's hard to see the tail, but it almost looks like it's chopped off at the top, making it look more symmetrical like a white.

Not up on my Sharks
but i would have thought that the waters up around Shark Bay would be too warm for Great Whites .

Nah Great Whites range all
Nah Great Whites range all Tropical Waters, even around Indo and Thailand, Red Sea, Mediterranean. They are everywhere except the far Antarctic and Arctic waters apparently. Guess they dont want to chow down on penguins or polar Bears :)

i had to look back a couple
i had to look back a couple of times, nah its not a white. the colouration is perfect, but the nose and body and fins are not, i have seen two while diving and neither looked like that under water. the head i think is the biggest give away that nose is wrong and so is the eye position. should be much fatter and rounder with the eye more forward compared to the body. id say probably a very fat grey whaler
