Hows the form of this bloke..lol

Been doing a bit of reading up on snapper... come across this article http://www.truebluefishing.com.au/snapper_fishing_23.html ..couldnt believe what i was reading.

This is part of the article that made me scratch my head...and he is a charter operator?????

Local knowledge
Snapper love structure, they feed over various patches of reef, gravel or broken bottom and to target and catch them consistently, offshore anglers must know how to locate these areas.
Good local knowledge is the key, Knowing the marks for a good range of snapper producing grounds is essential for successful Snapper fishing. There are various ways to find these marks, a good place to start is the internet, local fishing clubs, Books and magazines will also yield GPS marks. Another option is to go out with a local fishing charter operator and note land marks or take a hand held GPS and record a few waypoints.

Classic!Or look for other boats while fishing and sound around them.Generally it pays to be close enough to ask them if there are any snapper biting.

Dont pay to go on a charter

Dont pay to go on a charter to ping his spots, just 'follow' one out and when it's stopped and fish are being caught, cruze over and ping hard haha

bit of a loser if you ask me. if i caught someone with a hand held pinging my hard earned spots it would become a sinker without a line attached.

Depends

Wed, 2012-08-15 18:44

Working off craypots depends on what time of the year.

When the whites are running most times the pots will be on sand on the seaward side of the reef and later on just dropped on weedy / rubble bottom. The one to watch for is 2 or more pots close together well away from anything else.

A hypothetical... (and not really related)... lets say your travelling to a fishing spot and see some cray floats off course, if you change course and find some good ground around the cray pots, is that classed as "pinging" a spot?

Seems it is an accepted method of "pinging" a spot... be interested in hearing the thoughts.

Thats a good question, that I have asked here before.

Ive done it plenty of times but there are some who are VERY vocal about the various incarnations that "pinging" is deemed to be.

Id warrant that there would unlikely to be ANYONE who likes a dhuie that hasnt done it, either fished or at least stopped and looked.

So-the question is "is it ok to ping a craypot amateur or pro?".

Really the only difference is that you dont get caught or spotted.

Not a smart thing to recomend

Thu, 2012-08-16 15:39

Not a smart thing to recomend in this case ,but I reckon everyone is getting a bit carried away with this pinging crap.

Where does it stop......

Is it acceptable to squid where the black spots are on the jetty? Its clearly somonelses fishing spot ?

What about going back to a place where you saw someone catch fish off the beach? Ive driven up and down this part of the coast dozens of times looking for new ground.....so if someone sees me fishing there would it be unacceptable for them to try that spot at a later date when Im not there?

Sure its anoying if someone is following you around trying to mark all your spots  but I cant see anything wrong with dropping a line in a spot youve seen someone else fishing to see whats there? It is Australian waters and we are all Australians........your probably not the first person to fish that spot nor the last.

Just my opinion........tick....tick.....tick....

and mark it cause no doubt someone has been there before you...........i think we need to just worry about the plicks who do it deliberately like follow you or pull up on ya mark as you're leaving otherwise this could on forever........its a mighty big ocean .....who cares if i fish the same spot you did last week... i didnt know you fished it and im here now ...get over it!

I agree, just because you

I agree, just because you fish a spot and its marked in your gps doesn't mean you have any right to claim it over any other boat.  its everyone's ocean and if we all start getting too precious about it, we'll start having incidents of 'boat rage', and do we want that?  sure there could be some accepted protocols about whats not acceptible behaviour, but if someone does breach those, well hey, its not sheep stations.  chill out and be happy that all out there share your enjoyment of fishing, and you may have provided the opportunity for some young child or teenager on the other boat to catch their first really BIG fish, and we've all seen the joy and happiness that brings to young face!
