How organised (anal) do you get with your tackle?

The vast majority of my fishing is from a boat, so gear, terminal tackle and rigs lean in that direction.

How do you maintain supplies (stocktake and refill) and record what gear (other than rods and reals) you use?

I have a plano 4 tray tackle box, with a (MS Word Table) template stuck on the inside of the lid (of each tray) with what is each (set up tray 'cell')

My rigs (mostly paternosta or derivitives) are all in zip lock bags with cutt up labels (again using printed out MS Word tables) with LINE (Brand, Mono, FC etc), RATING, SWIVELS (if used - brand type, including tri-cranes) HOOKS and SIZE (of hooks).

My wife thinks I'm mad EmbarassedLaughing

I make LOTS of rigs because I HATE wasting time out on the water, especially when the fish are biting. Besides, it's MUCH easier tying 'THAT' knot on a bench top than rolling on the sea.

I couldn't agree more. I always make my rigs at home. Normally I just put them in separate zip-lock bags. I don't bother labelling as the bags are see-through. I love getting out there and just baiting up, dropping the line and getting straight onto the fish while others are sitting around scratching their heads tying rigs. hahaha!

Predictable Laughing, Money mouth.

Self humility is one of my endearing attributes - and I confess to be 'organisationaly distractable' Laughing

Got the Medalist version. Great bag and lets you store pretty much anything you need to take with you for a day out.

Best $90 Ive spent.

When we fish in close down here most of the territory is pretty snaggy, I'd love not to loose too much gear. Any secrets LOL.

What I have started to do is not use 'sacrifical' line at the bottom end of the paternostra rig as I find that tangles too much. Instead, I use the same PE mono as the rest of the rig and only put two 'turns' in the uni knot, that way, if the sinker does get snagged, a moderate will release the sinker.

Not that anal, have gear in

Not that anal, have gear in several setups depending on the scale of the venture. I usually view fishing as an opportunistic exploit. Happy to chop and change till I get results.

Rigs

Just make a heap of rigs at home and use those square rig bags with the zip lock pouches to store them.

Dont label them as you can usually tell whats in them.

i tend to make heaps at a time. when your making rigs for 3 or 4 people it takes time. i have a system , all the paternosta rigs wound on to a section of pool noodle, then all the snelled hooks on another diff size diff noodle then they sit in a draw that i have on the boat , next draw down has spare line and hooks then there is a draw for other bits and pieces , still gets messed up a bit but.So Colin your wife thinks your mad, well i think we are all a bit mad , some more than others, going out day after day throwing bits of steel with a chunk of meat of some sort down to the bottom of the ocean attatched to a thin bit of line hoping to catch a fish and when you get something and wind it up all that way and find its not what you want you tend to throw it back into the water. if that doesnt say we are mad what willLaughing

pool noodle

Sun, 2009-12-13 08:02

the pool noodles are great - easy to poke a swivel into and then wrap up and poke the hook in. Have a few laying around the boat or tackle box and you are ready to re-rig at any time.

I also hate getting to a fishing spot and spending half an hour rigging up, I would rather get there, have the line ready to go and just drop the line straight away.

As far as being organised go - I am still going to have to work on that. I have crap everywhere in different boxes but now with a bit more organised storage at out new place I hope to get it all done, one day.

I have a big plano box and a tackle bag and was recently thinking about the best way to have all the bits and pieces in sorted in a stack and ready to go for the different scenarios of fishing (boat, river, beach, rocks, etc).

It really is never ending isnt it...

useful bags tip

Sun, 2009-12-13 13:59

pretty sure all banks give you the bags for free they are zip locked and perfect size. just go into your bank and ask for the coin bags. thats how i keep mine.

And more

Put the bank bags (one rig) inside the larger zip lock bags.  That prevents tangling.  Keep the larger zip lock bags separate for paternoster, running sinker, live bait, straylining rigs etc.  I'd like to elaborate but that would prove I'm anal.
