how hard do you drive your boat?

heading out , do you stay at a speed where you never get a bang , the occasional bang just to know you're near the limit  , or do you smash out there as fast as poss???

Conditions dictate speed

Fri, 2011-12-23 08:53

No use in rushing only to have an accident and put yourself and others in danger.

I also drive to conserve fuel (big distances here in the Kimberley) and generally sit on about 4200-4800rpm.

My hull is designed to cut through the chop so I drive the boat to do such (so about 4500rpm in sloppy water). Having a 24 degree deadrise (stern) means little banging.

I'll only hit above 5500rpm breifly to 'blow out the cobwebs' once in a while.

depends on the weather, if its calm flat theres only one way to go and that is flat out lol but most of the time i just sit on or around 4000 rpm and thats about 18 to 20 knots, thats with a 60hp merc,

Fri, 2011-12-23 08:53

ladies and kids onboard it's a steady 20knots maybe 25 if the conditions allow, my eldest daughter is at that "scared of the boat" stage so you can't go flat out. With the boys on board i don't mind a bit of banging around but you lose deckies pretty quick if the trip out and back are shit so always to conditions, i need to remind myself just because i'm comfortable doesn't mean everyone else is, fishing spots with no reference on the horizon can play with peoples minds.

flat day and it's 40knots to blow the cobwebs out

I've been out with one of the FW crew that tells you to drive his boat in such a way that he won't have to come and take the controls off you because he thinks he can drive it faster.

Another one used to have to get home before the mrs found out we had been fishing all day, so at home, washing up or not, BUT HOME, by 2:30pm. That did lead to some exceptionally bumpy runs thru to woodies, but we all lived!

Depends on what rates as a "bang"

A bang to my Pommie Mother InLaw is very different to what I'd rate as a bang. .

Even at high speed in semi decent conditions you can just get a case of really bad timing which certainly wakes everyone up

One reason I got a f'glass rig was so my young kids didn't get the shit scared out of them by an ally hull amplifying every little bit of chop.

what rates as a bang to me  is one that makes you  say something,  usually "oooooooo"  or "%u(k"

it also depends on how

Fri, 2011-12-23 09:45

it also depends on how 'comfortable' you are with your boat.

Mates of mine drive my boat sometimes (im onboard too) and they drive quite a bit slower because they are not as comfortable, or dont really know how the boat will perform in different conditions.

never to the point of being

Fri, 2011-12-23 09:59

never to the point of being uncomftable for me, the passangers and risk of damage to the boat!

I have been known to bring the Trophy I had home in rough weather fast, but that was more out of the need for coffee and warm clothes than anything else...lol

The Berty was very smooth and ran well into a sea, but was prone to bang a little on a short chop if pushed hard.

my rule is it should be a smooth transition from swell to swell, with minimal air and hard bangs!

We will see if I can keep to this rule in future lol

I own a 540 trailcraft......I bang with the best of em!!!!!

With an ali, if you aint banging a bit, you aint trying.......usually just try and stay 30 degrees off straight into the waves which calms things down, typically around 15-18 knots in white caps, and in calm conditions, run at 85% of full throttle to be reasonable on juice, which is about 24 knots out of 28 flat out.
