Keep in mind theres a difference between picking up a depth number and picking up fish reliably at that depth ;)

Get the 1kw tranny if you want to actually read the ground/fish not just hitting the 350m number your wasting your time with the 600 trany IMO

with the standard 600 watt transducer and that was before i talked to the hds dealer at the show! i was running mine on general fishing but he told me to change it to deep water so it will be interesting to see how it goes out there with that setting!

Experience with both the HDS10 and the FCV-585.

HDS10: you can probably get a bottom reading with the HDS10, but thats it. You will get annoying clutter, and probably quite a bit of made up crap on it as well.

Furuno FCV-585: you will reliably see bottom detail and fish down there.

Wed, 2011-10-19 16:53

yep ive been using the deep water setting since i got it, it shows way better bottom definition up to 195m so far yet to go deeper.....general mode has better ability to show depth at high speeds but less ability to show fish......proly just the auto adjust feature but i use manual adjust to adapt to the different depths that i fish....ive seen pics of the unit working in 1200ft of water in 200khz in general mode lol so i imagine with some fine tuning, it will be fine for 350m even with just a 600w tranny

Ahh just save yourself some grief and read through some of Lucky Tim's posts about that unit in deep water, even with a 1kW tranny.

Had hds 10 with 1 kl and you will struggle to find fish in 350 it will show bottom but it's a long way to go and you need to be spot on in that depth that's why I sold it makes a good plotter

Wed, 2011-10-19 18:48

used a HDS with a 600w transom mount up in exmouth, we got bottom to 280 in slighty rough conditions and caught plenty of rubys. However we did have to travel very slow. With a 1KW it will work better in those depths. The HDS are a great unit for the price, i think alot of people don't know how to use them properly thats why they cop flack from fishos. After testing Furuno gear and HDS i have found it is easy to go from using lowerance to using furuno however its difficult for a furuno user to go to a lowerance unit, not because the Lowerance is no good but you do need to have some understanding about using your electronics to use the lowerance where as furuno any rookie can use it.

Wed, 2011-10-19 23:36

I keep hearing that "you need to set the lowrance up right" but why? Practically everyone has them not setup perfectly, and if people cant set them up well, then thats not good. Its like having an average car and saying it goes well because you can tune it up, but if most people are not going to be able to know what to do, then its never a good car for any practical purposes. Sure fiddling is good, but if they cant work for 90% of people out of the box, whats the point?  Having seen both numerous times, i'll still go with furuno.   That or someone needs to tell people exactly how to set them up, then tell lowrance to do that out of the box.

edit: Just to clarify: Not having a go at you Luke, just the units in general. Just seems like HDS's dont live up to some of the hype generated unless you stumble on some magic settings. Would be good if someone uploaded a guide to these specific to the units. Would be a good thing to have at TackleHQ too (though you may already help people out with how to set them up?).

Well, I guess the depth penetration

Wed, 2011-10-19 22:27

would all depend on the sea conditions, currents, eddies etc. So best effort would be what the manufactures claim on an absolute perfect day. I don't have either units so can't really comment, but say for the example you gave us ie 350m, just go the 1KW, then don't look what a 2KW can do 'cause you'll just want that too.....

good luck

Thu, 2011-10-20 19:40

I have a HDS 10 and a Airmar M260 in hull tranny and hit 300m....once.

Didn't go close again so swapped it for a Furuno 585 and have had 600m read with the same transducer.

I kept hearing about HDS magic settings and tried all that was suggested but never got the same results as the Furuno.

Lucky Tim I had hds 10 with m260 was told by airmar that it would not work on other sounders and no adapter was available so it's still in hull did you wire it yourself as I could use it as a backup
