Helping to gain some insight into the fishing and boating communities

Hi,
**This post has received prior approval from Fishwrecked Admin**
New to the forum and seeking help to gain some insight into the fishing and boating communities.
Looking at ways to bring boat owners and the fishing / boating community together and would very much appreciate 1 - 2 minutes of time to answer a brief survey. To say thanks to those that can spare the time, I have 3 x $100 BCF vouchers to give away that will be drawn 30 September 2019.
Many thanks in advance to those that can assist.

looks like a typical survey
looks like a typical survey done when developing an app. There are quite a few of these apps in the states and they probably work because of the population.
In terms of "ride sharing" on fishing trips, whilst I am sure most people are legit and decent, I took a guy out once who was a complete tosser - I am time poor and don't fish as much as I would like too - as such not taking a chance like that again!

“Ride sharing” or receiving
“Ride sharing” or receiving payment from someone to take them out on your boat and making a business out of it would come close to breaching fisheries legislation of an unlicensed fish tour.

I wonder once you start
I wonder once you start moving to a profit based boat sharing comunity, where the line is to becomming a 'charter boat' and require a charter licence and required to use a surveyed fishing boat to carry paying passengers.

to be "profit" based you
to be "profit" based you would be asking a lot $$ per ride!
consider
cost of capital (outlay for boat)
rego
insurance
engine maintenance
fuel
I ran some quick numbers, on a 50,000 boat, taking only the above factors into consideration and taking 1 person out a month (assumes $100 fuel for the trip) - to make a "profit" you would need to charge that person over $450..... this ignores depreciation and other general/ancillary costs associated with owning a boat. The cost goes up exponentially as the size of the boat increases......

The boater owner might not
The boater owner might not be making a profit, but the organizers of the app would be arranging the 'fishing charters' for their profit. Once that part becomes a commercial operation there would at some point potentially be a line had been crossed between recreational fishing or an organized charter.
I am not sure the boater would need to even need to make a profit to cross that line, just covering part of the costs towards the days fishing might suffice. Consider selling your catch I don't think fisheries care if your covering your days costs or not just the fact your selling fish is enough to get prosecuted.
Taking any fee for passengers also brings you into the expensive world of commercial boating and AMSA regulations. Boats need to be built to standards have more safety equipment and qualified crew.

The minute you charge a fee
The minute you charge a fee you are a charter.
Won't be hard for fisheries to do a sting and land you in court. Charter co's will kick up a fuss for fisheries to take action.

that's not hard to navigate
that's not hard to navigate around (like the pun?? !!) - this has been thrashed out before but instead of a fee its a cost contribution - no different to when my mates come out with me and they chip in for fuel
ride sharing, uber, ola they all do it
There is an app now where you can "share" you boat for a fee, theory being there are a lot of boats that just sit in pens not being used - I cant imagine it being successful and there is not a realistic number you can put on it that would get me interested

The issue of “contributing to
The issue of “contributing to costs” is a vexed one that has been tinkered with over the years, originally in the aviation sector.
There still is no flat out guide to that but the authorities look at a number of things including if there is any connection between the people passing money.
And like most things, at the end of the day it’s when something goes wrong.
Then one of the “passengers” is hurt, hires a lawyer and says “I thought it was a charter”.
Best lawyer wins, and it’s unlikely your insurance company would be ponying up the $$ if they agreed.
For me, boat/trip share looks like a smart option on paper, but reality is otherwise.
Once someone “expects” something in return (like a certain quantity of fish) it’s not fun.
Ive done charters many times, and I’ve taken many people to the islands.
Mostly friends, plus some friends of friends.
And there’s been some doozy’s.
In one case, a call after getting home from my mate (who didn’t come along) saying “hate to say but Joe Bloggs (who didn’t put in anything, food, $$, filleting or cooking, nor did I ask) rang me saying he thought I may have kept some of his fish by mistake..."
Im happy to go alone at times, with no expectations other than from the kids who expect full entertainment, fish on every drop and a menu selection.
Sounds like a charter haha!
EDIT, I did the survey, but found that its not possible to submit more than one option as your concern.
My concerns would be Safety, Insurance and incompatibility/unrealistic expectations.
If I was going to take someone out, it'd be after Id actually met them and then I'd offer if I thought it'd be a fun trip.

On this similar subject of
On this similar subject of recreational vs professional operators, a while back I was reading about Angel Flight and CASA
Angel Flight is a great initiative for regional people who have serious illnesses to be flown to cities for treatment.
Its done by volunteer private pilots in their own or hired aircraft, and Angel Flight pays the fuel.
CASA are reassessing requirements and their statement is "this is not about flying friends or relatives". If such comes into aviation, historically it will follow a few years later into marine.
