looking for a new rod arround 10kg and alot of the sites i have been on are dribbleing stuff and it sounds like chineese to me and i have a few question that i was hoping i could get answers for
what is the difference between the different actions used to discribe rods?
and what would be a good casting rod arroung the 10kg mark for snapper and other northern species?

Wow, 200 reads and no help,
Wow, 200 reads and no help, maybe need to specify boat or land based, spin or overhead, price range??
Im no expert but I can give you my 2 bobs worth. Regular taper means the bend when under load will incorporate the entire length of the rod, fast taper means the top section will bend more and the lower section is strong creating more leverage. A regular taper rod takes the strain of the angler when on something big under the boat for instance.
For your needs, a fast taper would be ideal, all depends on your budget. I presume you are after a spin outfit? Glass rods are cheap and abuse resistant but not as good for fishing plastics or twitching stick baits etc imo. Something around the 6'6" to 7' length would be good for casting yet not too long on the tub. I would go for something with a bit of length from the reel seat to the butt. I say this because I have a 6'6" daiwa tournament master s for the same purpose and the butt is short and sucks arse when on something decent. Ideal for my 4 yo boy so he can put it in a bucket and fight something but I will get something with a longer butt. I will only have my outfits up to 10lb with short butts that can tucked under the forearm. But in saying that, the rod is well balanced and would be good for jiggin lures all day and a longer butt rod may not be so kind to a limp wrist like mine lol
Head in to any good tackle shop and they should find you something to suit your needs and budget.
I am, as I've said, merely competent. But in an age of incompetence, that makes me extraordinary.

As tim-o has said regular
As tim-o has said regular taper is also called parabolic and the action is a linear bend from tip to butt which absorbs the shock from fighting fish ( popular with squidders ) and fast taper is the flicky type rods which have a thin tip running down to a comparatively solid butt section. I have a parabolic rod for squidding otherwise prefer flickys for fish. Then you have the choice of glass, composite or graphite. Glass and composite are forgiving yet lack the direct feel of a graphite however graphites can be quite brittle in comparison and do not suffer abuse. For a glass rod the ever reliable ugly sticks are good value and for graphite there's shimano, daiwa, pflueger and g loomis offering a good range depending on budget. Head in to some tackle stores and try some out and see what feels right for you. Maybe some other people on here can offer some advice?
