Gumtree Advert - attempted scam
Submitted by Iceman on Mon, 2011-11-07 14:25
selling my Scuba gear so placed an advert in Gumtree. Last night got a SMS asking for details and to reply via an email address.
Responce was that he was overseas at the moment and would arrange for the gear to be picked up (sight unseen) once I had set up a paypal account. The way the email read his english was not the best so advised cash only on collection. Have not heard back from him so suspect attempted scam.
If anyone interested details of the gear for sale in the latest for sale section on the site.

The ex was selling a skirt on
The ex was selling a skirt on gumtree and got the same crap, I told him I worked with a logistical company and I could get cheaper delivery if he would send me the delivery money. Stumped him then.
The GUY said he would put 600$ AUD into her account, and she had to send 550$ to the guys delivery agent (the skirt was $50). The worst part was that she actually believed it since she isn't clued up about stuff like that and nearly went ahead with it until by fluke chance she asked me if it might be dodgy.

When asked by a non-fisherman 'how many fishing rods do you really need?' the correct answer is either:
n+1 (where n is the number of fishing rods you currently own); or
n-1 (where n is the number of fishing rods which would cause your significant other to dump you.

Scam
I got three different ones last night within minutes of posting a car ad.. check it out.
As for the payment..i can only pay via the fastest and secure way to pay online(PayPal) here.
I have a private courier agent that will come for the pick up after the payment have been made ...so no shipping included and With the issue of my details, transferring the name of ownership and signing of all paperwork will be done by the courier services company agent so you don't have to worry about that.
You can now send me your PayPal email so i can pay in right away and also include your address in your reply. If you don't have a paypal account, you can easily set up one...log on to www.paypal.com.au and sign up its very easy... i would have loved to talk to you on phone but i work mainly offshore, our phone is down on the rig right now due to bad weather, that was why i sent you a text, i even wonder how my message deliver to your phone but for now we can only communicate through the same mailing channel.await your reply asap.
Thanks
Chris

Curt Reply
Last time I got one of those sms wanting me to email them, I gave them a lovely, colourful verbal serving (SMS) as a reply. I doubt he/she received it but gee it felt good. Funnily enough, I did not get a response!

There has to be a way to scam
There has to be a way to scam the scammers that are using this scam.
i.e - set up a fresh paypal account, give them that, wait for them to deposit the funds - then just withdraw the funds and give them a fake address and stop replying to emails?
Perhaps thats a new niche market for exploitation.
