Google Earth

was just wondering if anyone knew a way to distinguish deep drop offs from reefs, i think i have found a decent spot with a nice drop off within casting distance from the beach but im not sure if it is a massive chunk of reef.

if anyone has experience with reading sattelite images and knows a way to distinguish these things from each other, your help would be much appreciated

yeah, only reason im asking is planning on going late tomorrow night on the change of tides, so swimming in the dark is a no go and also wont be able to see obviously being night time. lets hope im right with the spot and dont lose too many rigs. Bring on the land based pinkys!

 Nearmap tends to have much

Thu, 2012-05-10 21:22

Nearmap tends to have much higher resolution pictures and several dates to choose. Even if it looks like its getting blurry, try still zooming in because just recently I could literally count the bricks in a driveway!

Once you find the spot, try different dates to get the clearest view. Overhead views will tend to show reef and weed pretty similar, so it can be pretty hard to tell which is which (most reef has weed on it or is dark brown, except for some exposed limestone areas). Depending on the area, you might be able to figure out which is more likely. The trick to telling the difference between a drop off and weed is the subtle colour difference (water v weed) and that drop offs tend to have more blurred edges, while the weed will have sharp edges on the pic.

i also use nearmaps i was

i also use nearmaps i was just reffering to google maps so people would have general idea what the subject was about. Nearmaps is good because yes you have dates to choose from so you can see how the gutters have changed and moved through the different months due to weather.

i agree another thing is you can zoom in quiet far with still a fairly clear image. apperently google maps updates every 6 months?

cheers for the tips though i think the blurred edges and sharp edges should distinguish the two with this spot, and usually reef wont move? so im guessing if it has moved each month then it is a drop off or a gutter?

Cheers,

Jamie

Reef won't move but it can

Thu, 2012-05-10 23:19

Reef won't move but it can get covered or uncovered by sand (but usually not covered by weed then), and weed does move. Just need to make your best guess. Otherwise when you get there you should be able to figure it out :p

Google maps may have an update every 6 months but not all the images. Some can be years old, and they're still not as good resolution as nearmaps.

It should still be free but

It should still be free but it seems that lately sometimes the pages stuff up and it sends you to a different page where all the options are not free and exorbitant. Have a look here and you can make sure you get to the free area for personal use: http://forums.whirlpool.net.au/archive/1891696

Nearmaps? what a great tool - but their prices are pure greed. We use it very occaisionaly to get a distance but because we are a business they want 5k a year! Rio Tinto we are not. This is the same reason i shop online in the U.S.
