giant squid

just watching these on the 5pm news.  They are huge and apparently vicious, although not necessarily to humans.  Some scientists are blaming climate change warming up the water off California meaning the squid don't need to return south to find warmer water.  Others say they are heading north chasing a depleting food supply.

On youtube they have a video of a humbolt attacking another about 1m and killing it while its a on the jig. Then he gaffs it and gets both haha, I reckon that if they were hungry and it got a hold of you, you would be gone for sure

It certainly does make you wonder FF. Some of the doccos they have on foxtel & that sometimes are quite eye opening.

Theres a whole lot of water we havnt even been able to checkout yet & they know stuff finds otherways to flourish without sunlight they have shown that already.

I think we should be spending alot more efforts on our own planet before we go exploring any more of outer space.

I seen a doco on this last

Sun, 2009-07-19 10:49

I seen a doco on this last night.  They were jigging up these squid off west coast of Mexico.  They were about 1m long not including the tentacles.  They were using them for bait for bill fish!

Docos...

Sun, 2009-07-19 18:22

...saw a very good David Attenborough one on Nat Geo channel last night...great underwater footage of sailfish/marlin/broadbill, shot in Mexico/Florida/Cuba/Costa Rica/Peru/Ecuador/Great Barrier Reef. The largest black marlin and broadbill swordfish ever caught on rod and reel were taken in the '50's off Peru/northern Chile, now that patch of ocean is almost wiped of gamefish due the heavy commercial hammering on the humboldt squid population.

The story in California is that the squid have more or less taken over and are out-competing the fish...during certain times of the year, all they can catch are squid.

So you have one area where the depletion of the squid is affecting the top end predators, and another area where the proliferation of squid is harming the fish population.

As spectacular as those squid might be, we have to consider the more sinister implications of what's happening in the eastern Pacific.
