Giant 5m shark sighted in Cockburn Sound early today
Submitted by NightWolf on Wed, 2011-09-14 09:06
A FIVE-METRE shark has been spotted in Cockburn Sound this morning.
The Department of Fisheries has issued a warning for water users to be cautious after the shark, believed to be a great white, was seen by a fisherman about 6.30am.
It was spotted in Cockburn Sound near the Alcoa Power Station.
Last week, bodyboarder Kyle Burden, 21, was killed by a giant shark near at Bunker Bay, near Dunsborough.
Mr Burden suffered massive injuries to his lower body and died at the beach after he was dragged to shore by fellow surfers.
If you see a shark, report it to the water police on 9442 8600.

You beat me to
it nightwolf, don;t know how to do the link thingie. We sat at woodie point last sunday having a ice-cream watching a young kid being pulled behind a dinghy, then some free divers swimming around the point of woodie's, fisherman burly up on the rocks geezes glad the shark wasn't near there. As I got some nice shots on the camera with the kid being towed would have hated taking photos of a tragic event.

In that photo, the nose does
In that photo, the nose does look too blunt, however, it may just be the refraction of the water. Theres a lighter grey where the nose should be, and the pectorals have a fair bit of 'shift' so possible on the nose too? Or not a GW or not an actual recent photo... Though, the media wouldnt report a bull shark I dont think? Not enough sensationalism for their tastes.
Didnt think tigers would be very common around Perth waters though?

being the media, pretty sure
being the media, pretty sure it isnt a photo of the actual shark...
they re use old footage all the time, either way if its a bull/tiger or white i wouldnt want to be in the water!

Tail
Looks like a white to me. The top and bottom sections of the tail look the same size, like a white pointer's should be and even though the nose looks blunt suspect its only refraction as hlokk says or lighter colour pattern

Since I was one of the blokes
Since I was one of the blokes on the boat, I can tell you it was a white, and since it was bigger than the 18 foot boat we were in, you do the maths. I got a pretty good look at it when it took a fish out of my hands while I had it by the trace. For every fish we got on the boat it would take three. It didnt attack the boat, just didnt care about anything in its way when it was chasing a hooked fish. Small craft and yaks chasing snapper be carefull, it pushed our 18 footer around like a toy. All we did was contact vmr to advise them it might not be safe for small craft chasing snapper in the area we were in and the story went viral.
Cheers

I know a chap that believes
I know a chap that believes he hooked a great white at the Power station a few years ago in a boat, towed it around like a rag doll.
I guess with the increase of fishing kayaks in Perth it will be not long before we get some interesting footage,,
