Garden island and Carnac newbie
Submitted by Waddy87 on Tue, 2019-01-01 21:18
heading out tomorrow for a fish, generally try just get some squid and whiting around woodmans point. Would like to head out behind garden or around Carnac but not sure what bait or if I should be using lures. I see a lot of people jig these days but I wouldn’t know where to start with that. Any help would be much appreciated. Also is it worth using burley

Burley up on light change
Burley up on light change with mulie cube or mash them up if you have a burley muncher. Use they sand whiting and squid you catch for bait. Float them out the back in the trail. Snapper love them

Ah ok and only burley on
Ah ok and only burley on tide change? I bought a cheap little burley bucket that was a fail, it didn’t sink plus was a choppy day. Does the dead whiting get deep enough for snapper? Is butterfish any good for bait I seem to catch a million of those fuckers.

Not sure about butter fish.
Not sure about butter fish. Your bait doesn't have to be deep down for them to hit. Dawn and Dusk are best

Do you stay reasonable close to the islands? I don’t want to venture out to far.

Yes you can stay close to
Yes you can stay close to islands...once through the last set of channel markers there's a special yellow marker....North - South along that line holds a few good patches.

As above.
The yellow marker(the shark detector) line is good for pink snapper as is in closer between garden and carnac.
If you look on the charts you can see perriam reef which is a big reef system runs north south and has a nice big sandy edge which is ideal for pinks.
Anchor up berly up and enjoy.

Went out with not much
Went out with not much suckers, hooked on to something big, lol one that got away but only using light 10kg gear. Caught what looks to be a cross between a whiting and a wrasse

Is five fathom bank sand or reef? I see a lot of boats head out there. Do you fish on the bank or to the east or west?

Use the search function
Use the search function waddy...the 5 is a reef system, you should see the contour lines on your plotter.
Anchor and burley works but you need sun up down, tide change / bite times.
Read...read and search.
