Gar Fishing Tips
Submitted by iamafunkyboy on Mon, 2011-07-18 10:04
Hi Everyone,
I was wanting to pick the brains of the wealth of knowledge that I continually read on here,
What type of rigs does everyone recommend for Gar fishing, I went yesterday and seen heaps of them around, my berly was good so that wasnt a problem.
I used a size 10 long shank hook, I think this may have been my issue, but I also used small bits of prawns.
Does anyone have any tips on gear that I should use to catch them also any other types of bait? any info would be much appreciated.
Thanks Guys and Girls

Your hook is cool IMO
And so is the bait. But the bloody things are very fussy and if they feel a hook in the bait they just nick off after sucking it.
I use a berley blob, flaoting cage etc, and fish much like I do for hezza's with a longish leader to the bait. I use about the same lenght as a small flick rod, or if I use a beach rod, about 1.5 m. Slowly wind in.
They either werent on the bite, or they felt the hook in the bait. Just increase the size of the bait to just cover the tip of the hook. If the long shank 10 dont work go a 12. Or even change to a standard pattern so they dont feel the hook.
Hope this helps a little.

I use a small pencil float with a small split shot to keep it up right tied to 1m of flurocarbon with a small size 10 longshank with a small chunk of coral prawn or maggots or if all else fails chuck some berly in then try to jag em with a big treble ;)

Gar Tips
I use #8-10 thin worm hooks. I rig the berley blob so that it have a 10cm free movement between 2 swivles. I have a 0.18mm 40cm fluoro tipped section attached to a thicker leader (0.40mm x 0.7m) behind the blob. I "wind dry" the prawn which makes it a bit tackier on the hook. Sometimes they go nuts on the surface at the splash of the berley, sometimes more fussy deeper. I then attach a split shot weight in front of the tippet to keep the bait down. Retrieve is fairly slow. Sometimes all they'll eat is they berley. I then dip the bait in the berley oil. Also fish with light braid for those subtle bites. Baits should be about the size of a sunflower seed.
Seems technical but you'll fill up your bucket in no time.

i had some success with a bait chaser/sabiki rig under a blob , unweighted. smallest hooks and lightly baited
If I spent half as long fishing , as I do reading this bloody forum , I'd be twice the fisherman I am.

When they've been fussy I've
When they've been fussy I've used long (2m) of 4-6lb fluorocarbon with a tiny (i think no.6) hook, no weight, just a tiny blob of prawn on the end and left the spool open till i see the line go tight then lock the bail and lift. Picked up some very nice gardies this stealth way.

me thinks your hook is a little to big
Sorry about the bad grammar, just been reading a psot with bad spelling and it had me bawloourred. LOL at that one still.
I think that you are probably saying the right thing, but the hook size should be at least 8, but especially 10 or even 12. Otherwise all perfect. With the spool free the gardies think they can swim away with it, which is often their want, and thus they take the bait down instead of "mouthing" it.

if they are very touchy
either cover your small piece of prawn in burley or make up a 50/50 mix of burley and dough(make sure it is very firm) you mould this onto the hook and gently throw it out the gardies will rip into it and usually the hook too! i usually use a no 12 hook

tuna oil is a good burley as it attracts them, but they dont gorge themselves on it and become fussy

Oily rag
a couple of days before i go chasing gardies a soak a rag in tuna oil. Use an ice cream container so the mrs does not get annoyed with the smell. Then when out tie the rag to some rope. can then be tied to boat or rocks. give a good slick so you can see them and keep them around without feeding them too much. I also try and bend out the hook a little so that when they suck it in and pull away they get hooked. Have a better hook up rate this way.
