furuno worldwide warranty

i am looking to buy a 585 unit and its obviously way cheaper from the states..

i have done a bit of reading around on forums and the like and some people seem to think that the furuno units are covered by a warranty which states that  anywhere you are the agent must service them if something goes wrong.

i emailed furuno and the reply was a bit grey.

i got an email from a dealer in aus aswel and he said he didnt want anything to do with it....again on the forums some people wrote that the dealers will say that because you didnt buy it from them they wont fix but they have to under the warranty...

can you see where my confusion lies....

has anyone had a issue with their furuno product that was bought from the states and how did you go about it??

thanks heaps

If you had a unit installed

If you had a unit installed into a boat in the US by an authorized installer then imported the boat, Furuno here will cover it. If you brought in a unit on it's own and installed it here, you are on your own. This is what I was told by Furuno USA back in 2008.

Pretty much, Furuno service

Pretty much, Furuno service in Australia is managed by the agent Taylor Marine, but they're not obliged to carry the can on units that their dealers didn't sell.

You're lucky, in my industry,

You're lucky, in my industry, we get people trying to claim foreign-sourced units with us, but the supplier won't pay out it if they didn't make money out of it.

In terms of Australian consumer protection law, if an importer brings a unit in, they're obliged to offer warranty on goods they sell. Its to protect one supplier from having to warrant another supplier's goods.

I guess its a different story if a manufacturer asks their various agents to carry the can.
