FUN IN THE SUN WITH B JOHN

Just reurned from 2 weeks in Onslow with Big John,we spent the first 3 days at Long Island with our crewie Timbo, boy it was rough, the wind got up to about 30 knots at night which blew sand everywhere, even blew over steel camping chairs, the biggest concern was for the boat on the mooring and getting buried by sand in the swags. the days were fishable with many good fish caught, spaniards, rankins, emporors etc,The skipper dived to get a supply of crays for tea.The beach was under siege from huge turtles laying their eggs, man does that look exhausting!
The next day was a lazy day down on the river where we caught 8 muddies for tea.
Then the weather changed for the better and we caught huge amounts of big Rankins and other cellar dwellers, many big spaniards on floaters and jigs [burley and they will come]queenies on poppers and jigs, mack tuna on jigs and slicers.
The last day was a red letter day where we found a patch of red heaven in 20 metres, big reds, coral trout, huge rankins on leadhead jigs and a few spaniards, finished of the day with a dive in pristine waters for crays.
The action hardly ever slowed and most fish were released to play another day.
The area hardly seems to have changed over the 20 years, one positve was the huge amount of Rankin cod that we caught and released.

Was looking at those weather reports and sounds like you did well considering.  The tinny hasn't had a bath in a long time now and is starting to get withdrawals, maybe this weekend. :(

I would looove to get back up that way, especially to dive and shoot again with Big John and James. I was lucky enough to get out with you guys on one day, but in that short time I sure learnt ALOT.

For a couple of blokes who have only 'just' recently moved up there, they seem to have the area sussed out and are truly enjoying life!

I certainly have to give you guys alot of credit for both skill and knowledge.

Maybe next year!

Thanks for the kind words Kasey. Keen to seriously look into some popping and gamefishing next year now that I've scratched the itch. Maybe we can tee something up for then, I know Jay's keen to do some popping down this way.

On that note, I can't believe you and uncle went out and camped on Long Island when you did! Haha!

We were out on the first day and there was a point where I thought we were not going to survive the trip back from the Murions. Adam had a good laugh.

Rough

Tue, 2008-10-14 12:10

The Monday night was a shocker! Was up most of the night watching the boat bounce around like a cork on the mooring.

Glad to say the mooring tackle never moved a whisker. Something to be said for using oversized plough anchors.
