Free Crab Bait

Heard an interesting bit of info last night .....

Apparently Blowies make absolutely fantastic bait in crab pots.

Sounds too good to be true, anyone tried it?? No shortage of them thats for sure.

NW blowies i have seen people catch them on that, but only if you have no bait and that is your last resort otherwise other bait out catches it.

I do believe my source Dicey, pretty grisly old boy (he's going to luv that) who has vast fishing knowledge.

Another stated the NW Blowies make great bait in cray pots.

Just wondering if anyone else has given it a go?

Yes learnt alot from oldies

Yes learnt alot from oldies fishing but also showed them alot of things as well, most are retired cray fisherman or trawler operators, you will usually find them fishing for gardies and herring, so next time you see a old guy fishing for small fish dont be afraid to pick their brains.

They are good in the sense that if there is alot of blowies around, seals, trumpeters etc picking at your bait then it works good for those sort of areas, but if you were to compare it to a snapper head or Stinky oily lamb, then your chances on the blowie is slim.

Bugger ok give me one more guess here we go; yep you would have to love fishing to be on here & helping others out? well, if replying to some posters with your keyboard behind the pulpit in a condescending manner counts...

Anyway back to my guess, you also enjoy a little pocket boxing when walking past windows??

Nope if you met me in person and i spoke to you, you would never pick me to be the same person, my english aint the best so it may seem like im arrogant but in reality im just stating my experience, as for so much free time, i guess i was on the wrong side of the law and paying for it and helping people out passes the time nicely.

I am the last to comment on arrogance but I have taken offence to the flaming you have delivered to some posters.

Hmm.........  Will the cray/crab die?

Yep it's pretty clear I am calling you a wanker. However I have to get this right: you're suggesting that you were on the "wrong side of the law" and posting / "helping" on here is some sort of community service or a way of passing the time?

Lol switch hands dude, how long do you get for tugging it public these days?

I tried it last year...

Sun, 2010-10-31 08:17

...on the advice of some oldies in the Peel Estuary. We did catch a few blueys but wasn't nearly as reliable as the mullet we normally use. As far as the toxins being ingested...it would take a fair bit of time for the blowie flesh to metabolise into the crab's system, and you also have to consider that crabs are scavengers and eat just about every single organic thing they can get their claws on anyway, so I personally have no reservations about eating crabs that were caught on blowie bait.

MMmmm?  What is going on???

I've never tried it myself but have know of people who swear by it.  They also re use it many times over.  I can't see it working that well compared to a fresh herring frame or something similar.  Crab bait doesn't have to cost a lot.  I think some people just love showing off that they didn't have to pay for bait?  They probably have to pull their nets 3 times as much to get their feed though?

I tried it a couple of times last summer in the estuary when I ran out of bait. One of my nets has a close mesh and the bastards get stuck in it,stabbed them ,put them on the bait clip and I caught as many crabs on blowies as on fish frames or chicken wings.
