Fishing Line Data

Hi,

Just surfing through some sites and came accross an intersting Aussie site with a whole lot of fishing related stuff on it.

I see a lot of posts relating to what line to use, how much will fit on a reel, what the breaking strains are etc etc. The link below might be of particular interest. It shows data on a huge number of mono and braid lines and the results of (apparently) independently conducted tests.

Enjoy

I've got a little spreadsheet that tells me how much line will fit on a reel, may have to get around to actually refining it a bit in case anyone else wants to use it. Always dependent on how accurate your input numbers are though.

If you can calc out a formula with squares and square roots, its not that hard (but an excel sheet is a little easier). It would be interesting to have it up on a website and have input boxes, but I have no idea how to do that (just the calcs behind it).

How do you test the line

How do you test the line diameters? (bit hard navigating round the site, but still couldnt find it).

I found the info for the lines no problems, just wondering in more detail how the measurements are made (i.e. with what tool/equipment, whats the accuracy, etc)

Paulus posted above, it is his site so maybe he can fill you in. Perhaps the measurements are those quoted by manufacturer

Pretty sure he measures them

Pretty sure he measures them (did did mention about the thin width then twisting it to get the wider width to get an average). Cant trust manufacturers, especially some *cough* hehe.

Hey Guys a little info

All this line testing goes back a little.

The line is all tested in the same manner so the results are comparable between them all.

Braid diameters are hard and are measured as they come off the spool, for the first measurement, it is flattened a little between thumb nail and fore finger, then that area is wound up 10 turns per inch measured again and the results averaged, compared to a microscopic measurement they are very similar.

A + B = C no matter how i do it.

Breaking strain, the average of 3 measurements and the best shown, done on an automatic testing machine. All tests done dry.

Plastic lines, I have a hardness number against them. You can compare line hardnesses against sizes and breaking strains, you will find a good low cost leader amongst the low cost monos.

I have also done some dry to wet tests.

Keep in mind all this exists because guys like you send in line to get tested, and i am allways looking for more.

Don't believe what is written on the box, and what is written on the box may not be what is on the spool inside that box.

Thanks
