Fishing with Braid

Hey everyone

I just went out and brought a penn combo which consists of a penn 560 slammer (reel) and a 7ft rod. I choose for them to put braid on and they insisted that a theram something fireline was a way to go. Ive got it on with 20lb braid.

As this is the first time ive used braid i am completly unsure on what to do?

For just some bait fishing off the rocks  Do you tie the braid directlty to a mono leader?? or do you use a swivel??

And using a lure do you tie directly to the braid or do you use a leader??

Any help would be much appreciated

Thanks

you will need a leader, if you don't have a leader you will have no stretch (which will result in pulled hooks and line breakage when something grabs your bait and runs)

also they are virtually invisible to the fish unlike braid (flurocarbon).

you can use a swivel for baitfishing, but when lure fishing you will need to tie a joining knot, something like an albright knot is good for someone who wants to keep it simple. If you want something stronger, double your leader via a bimini twist (fairly difficult)or a spider hitch (quite easy, not quite as strong).

What fish are you trying to catch

What fish are you trying to catch and where are you fishing.

Weight of leader will depend if you are near reef and how big the fish are.

I generally use 40lb leader for tailor. I know a lot of guys use 60lb but some use 20lb.

If chucking heavyish plugs or poppers (say 3 oz) I would use at least 40lb. I find I get too many breakoff while casting if I use 20lb.

But this is all for land based fishing. Are you lanbased or boat?

Lure fishing for Tailor a

Lure fishing for Tailor a 30-40lb leader should be plenty but some like to go heavier. I like 30lb Black Magic Tough Fluorocarbon as leader material for Tailor personally but mono is fine to.
