Not a bad idea, however I think the delivery cost that would need to be met by the customers might make the price too high.

 could be good. Can be a  pain rushing somewhere  to get decent bait on a Friday after work for an early morning fish Saturday. 

may be slow just covering the one ramp, if you had stations at all major ramps even like vending machines i think you would do well.

 Didn't all boats or the fishing shop in woodvale start a "tackle van (bait, ice)" at Hillary's? Don't know how they went with sales but each time I saw them at the ramp didn't look like they were getting much interest? Not sure many people knew about it and probably stocked up before getting to the ramp...

Would be a great idea for someone like me that has a big freezer for bait and can buy 30-40 kilos of bait at a time so that the delivery cost wouldn't be to prohibitive.  But as mongoose said I think you'd find that if someone was buying a couple of bits (say a couple of blocks of mulies and a box of yank squid) you'd need to be adding at least $30 delivery.  Afterall you are going to have to make a living out of it plus run a vehicle and people are going to want the bait delivered at a time that suits them and not want it dropped off at their front door at a time that suits you.  So this means you'd be zig-zagging all over the metro area doing deliveries.

Setting up at a boat ramp would probably be a better idea,so you'd have to get permission from the local shire for starters and I doubt you'd have any luck at woodies because of the shop that's already there.  But just thinking about it maybe you could set up your business model so that people placed their order with you telling you what time they're going to be at the boat ramp and could pick up the bait from you there.

 also, how could i find out how much people would be interested in this idea if i actually did go through with it, just so i can search up numbers and everything.

I reckon the north and south mole would be a good place.

Jaggo said over the winter you wouldn't make much money but I heard the north mole is the place to go for snapper fishing during winter so I reckon people fishing there would like some fresh squid, especially if it's right there just a walk away.

You just need to get the advertising sorted, it'll be slow at first, but as guys get used to the idea you will find an increase in sales. You could add a ice bin for the guys to stick thier fish waste after filleting etc. then add it to your old unsold stock, grind it up, make and sell berly blocks.

 Kinda reminds me of when we used buy our bait from Dutchies on Winterfold Rd, 2 bucks or there abouts for a huge block of mulies that you knew were still swimming within the last week. They had some quite large freezers in the back yard, I think you would have to aim for something similar.

would need to be very reliable also, would only take once of people rolling up to the ramp and your not there, for them to buy on the way instead.

 Jiffy van food is only good for bait IMO, sell to eat or bait.

 You can buy pretty much anything online now so why not bait. 

A couple of issues you'd have to think about regarding selling online is when will you be delivering? You'd need to make sure that someone is definitely home for the delivery as the bait needs to go straight into the freezer, you can't exactly leave it on the door step for them. That being the case are you going to be able to deliver it in work hours when the majority of your clients are at work or will you need to deliver out of work hours and if so will that work for you? If someone isn't home when you go to deliver it to them then what do you do?

Regarding the van, the issue I would see as Rob H pointed out is reliability. If you get a reputation that you are always at a certain boat ramp and people expect you to be there to buy their bait from you then they'll be pretty miffed if you aren't there the next time. Will you be at the ramp if it's blowing 15knts? what about 20knts? Will you be there for the early boaters? Speaking for myself I woud always want my bait sorted out in advance rather than hoping you're there at the ramp.

It's a decent idea. I know I'd buy bait off of you if you were reasonably competitive price wise and you could deliver it when I'm home. If I was you I'd do your research (if you haven't already) as to what margins you need for it to work and then perhaps only deliver in 10Kgs minimums.

 Would of used this service last week! 45 mins of driving round on my way to the river stopping at every servo, deli and iga I could find only to have to go back to the trusty old servo 500m from home to get some.. 

 i find it very interesting to read everyones comments and inputs and it does indeed help me alot, i will get to the drawing board, and see if i can come up with a fool proof plan  

ps. would this website be decent for advertising? 

If setting up shop at a boat ramp I would add some in date flares and epirbs to your stock... Have seen many people turned away by Marine Safety when being checked prior to launching!
