Finn Spindrift Dinghy Vs Polycraft Tuff Tender
Submitted by Swan River Fisher on Tue, 2011-09-06 07:49
High guys,
I'm looking for a smallish poly dinghy to fish around my area for bream by myself. I've closed it down to the Polycraft Tuff Tender 3m or Spindrift Dinghy 2.5 or 3m in length. I've seen a video of the spindrift in the surf and it was looking pretty good. Have any of you guys had experience in either?
Looking to spend around 2.2k for hull and motor max
Cheers Ben

I`ve been looking at both as
I`ve been looking at both as well . The Spindrift I can get to Exmouth with a 6hp suzuki 4 stroke for about 3k, the ploycraft price I got was around 3k just for the hull.
A mate in Busso has a spindrift and loves it.

I live in Perth and often go down to Busselton, and a small dinghy is all you need- the water is always so calm. Would a spindrift take a 6hp motor. And does your mate have the 2.45m or 3m Spindrift?

The mates in Busso is a 2.5
The mates in Busso is a 2.5 spindrift. All the new ones are 3 metres I think. Says only rated to 4 hp but I didnt speak to some bloke that sells them and he didnt say he`s put a 15 hp on one for a spin, didnt go really good either. . . If I end up with one it will have a 6hp suzuki, inbuilt fuel tank and pretty light so easy to lift on and off the big boat to take away for the weekend to desserted desert islands
the dingy will fit across the bow rail so we wont have to tow it. Perfect

Cool
What do you mean "he's put a 15hp on for a spin, didn't go really good either". Did it ride crap or something?
Also, and inbuilt fuel tank, wouldn't it have a very small range. I would much rather have a 25L tank so i could go further.
Do you think that 2.2k is achieveable for a spindrift hull and small motor?

The inbuilt tank will get us
The inbuilt tank will get us from the boat to the beach and back plenty of times I reckon. Dont want to cart any more stuff than we absolutely need to.

for my money , the polycraft
for my money , the polycraft is a whole other level. rated to 15hp but vids on youtube with 20hp
looks a right laugh
stable as and pretty unsinkable
If I spent half as long fishing , as I do reading this bloody forum , I'd be twice the fisherman I am.

Yes i agree with you there
Yes i agree with you there Grayzeee, the spindrift is very small and has a small motor capacity, i think 6hp. The pollycraft is a bigger and better hull, and motor capacity is much bigger. I've seen them with a 6hp and they fly.
I've been quoted anywhere from $1700 to $3000, hull only, where as i can get a brand new spindrift and motor for under 2k
Thanks for the imput

i got a finn spindrift and
i got a finn spindrift and 2.5HP outboard motor for under $2K , basically new, but bought from a guy that got them but never got around to using them.
Very happy with the spindrift, stable, easy to use, light and easy to carry. By having a motor under 6hp then all my friends and kids can use it without needing a skippers ticket
if you want to get a spindrift, then also try the finn factory, they have seconds ofr sale at times, also kayak shops can get them in, and might be cheaper than a dinghy shop

Cool
Might try that. I've got my skippers ticket anyway so motor size doesn't really matter, just cost.
