Finding Tuna With Sea Surface Temps etc
Submitted by Seaquest on Thu, 2010-01-21 12:05
After info on how sea surface temp, water colour and current movement relates to finding tuna. One of my goals this year is to catch a big tuna in the South West. Can anyone one tell me what I should be looking for and a good site to find this info.
Cheers

Not really to sure on a website..probly doesnt answer your Q but...
what i would be doing is just goin out a gd 20-25 mile and look for birds... even if theres no birds out its worth a troll. (id be using halco MAX's or pushers/christmas trees as you can troll them quick and cover a bit more ground).
Other thing worth while if there's few birds in the area would be to burley up with pollard, oil and mulie cubes. have a drifft bait or a livie under a balloon.
Lots of tuna's around atm.. im not sure about big ones tho, i reckon they are there but i cant catch them...

find the warm water/current.
find the warm water/current. most the sites i have looked at give you a free look at the sea surface temps but they are a few weeks old, you have to pay for current ones. as mentioned birds are your best bet to finding them, the few ive picked up off perth have been in the 50-100m mark. Also run your lures long, tuna usually sound easily so if you do find them circle the school wide so the lure cuts through not the boat! try this site http://www.bom.gov.au/oceanography/forecasts/idyoc10.shtml?region=10&forecast=2#
good luck

If you're really keen to get
If you're really keen to get a good tuna, make sure you subscribe to SST (Sea Surface Temp)... it's not a big expense & will allow you to pinpoint likely areas to focus on. It will save you running all over the ocean looking for that 'warm' spot.
Tuna love clean water & rapid changes in temperature.
You could probably look into cubing for them as well. I haven't done any tuna fishing in WA... so not sure how successful it would be.

Thanks Guys Have subscribed
Thanks Guys
Have subscribed to SST. Interesting site. Looks to be a few warm spots on the 200m line of Cape Naturalist. Will give it a go when we get a good day. Its about 55kms of the cape. Should be interesting to see whats out there, I dont think too many people fish that far out down here. Hopefully find some deep demersals as well.
Even if I dont find any tuna will be interesting following the Leeuwin current and how the water temp affects the salmon run.

Salmon
The water temps on the coast down that way have a huge effect on the salmon run.
Going back about ten yrs there was warm water right down to Cape Lleuwin and not one fish was caught on the west coast. Most spawned out wide from WIndy Harbour/Albany and that was it.

Some freo longline boats
fish down south here for fin, bigeye and broadys. They fish wide though. Am still about a month off doing anything serious but it would be good to swap a story or 2? Are you a member of the naturalist sport and game fish club?? Have been meaning to get to one of their club nights and check it out.
Happy hunting

Hmm yes, a Canal launch
Hmm yes, a Canal launch would see me get into it as well but that boat ramp frightens me and usually I launch at Quindalup. Any secrets/local tips to launching at Canals Feral? I worked on the Tuna boats years ago and they are out there... the bigger Bluefin and Bigeye and Yellowfin.

Mytime, never launched at
Mytime, never launched at Canals myself but my mates say that the swell needs to be next to nothing and avoid any wind with north in it.
Did you ever work in the south west on the tuna boats and what sort of depths were you fishing?

Canal rocks
Use it as your last option.
As Brendan says it is very swell dependant especially with bigger boats. The swell breaks on the ramp.
Unless very good weather and low swell.
Gracetown is an option but narrow ramp. Use the two markers in the gully up on the cliff to line yourself up when you come back in through the breakers. Look for them when you launch, but easy to see.
