Enhancing the Richtor Setup
Submitted by UncutTriggerInWA on Wed, 2011-08-24 17:22
Sick of seeing the Richtor get smashed and no hookup? Having hooked up are you pissed off that it takes 15 minutes to get the fugging huge single trebble out of the mouth? After finally getting the Treble out are you pissed off that the fish is pretty much dead?
I am!!!
This is my effort to change the setup. A small section of wire trace to a top assist hook and a similar hook at the tail.

Agree
Keen to hear if it works. I use poppers with a middle hook as well as an end hook for tailor and they often hit the middle hook. herbie tried something like this the other week and it didn't work. But that was probably operator error
Trebles are a bugger to remove on a snapping greenback

That's why I prefer the FAT-Rs
They come with dual trebles but again, it's a fuggin hassle when you get a big hookup. Trebles really can be a pain. I'll give this one a workout in the morning and let you know how it goes. My luck is such that I will flick the bail arm and sent the plug half way to Africa LOL.

Maybe just use jigging
Maybe just use jigging kevlar? I've just dropped a jigging single through the lead eye before and it works fine, although I only do it with really long Richter Plugs.
I'm sure it takes awhile for the tailor to get through it and no need to fuss around with crimps.

Spot on Jamie
that's what i do.
That setup looks OK except for the clip swivel. I'd be getting rid of that one and either getting a stronger one or just use swivel to split ring like we do for jigs.
Not a bad ldea anyway Uncut

I agree Matt
I did go searching in my box for a decent swivel.... I think I need another trip to the tackle store LOL. Always something missing. I don't trust the clip swivels but sometimes they can be quite convenient.

I don't really trust clips
I don't really trust clips anymore either, but he did say for tailor so I just let it slide ;)
Funnily enough the only ones I use these days are the Richter ones, and even then just for gamefish.

Flattening the barbs on the trebles
maybe another option, or perhaps flatten two of the three barbs. The use of hawaiian snaps may also be a better option than the snaps pictured.

Dodgy hawaiian snap
Did the snap break / straighten or the lure simply detach itself? I've requested comments about hawaiian snaps before without a lot of comment so I'm interested about other peoples experiences with these. I'm not a fan of the sanp swivel pictured but I guess a lot depends on the pressure you are likely to put on it.

lure detatched itself, the
lure detatched itself, the drag zipped in a single burst then the line went slack. i suspect it was weed as the snap was covered in a little bit of it. still no excuse tho, imagine if it was a 50kg spaniad instead...

" requested comments "
Alan, the Hawaiian snaps are strong from my experiences but are a pain to get on & off some times so I dont use them anymore but stock them as ppl ask for em!
Cross Lock snaps are better snaps for smaller fish and when targetting bigger fish the Richter hi-tensile clips as Jamie mentioned are the go!
Nice lure setup there Vince =)

Tks Ryan
I agree they can are a pain in the a... to get on and off, more off I find. My view is that if I struggle to get them off they are not going to detach by themselves easily but others seem to have experienced problems. I think you would need to be careful using them with fine diameter lines or wire where due to the fine diameter the line or wire may 'catch' in the clip???

For tailor and the like,
For tailor and the like, there are several swivels out there that will hold up fine. E.g. I like the cross locks. If you start fishing above PE2/3 or are jigging, then makes sense to use something else. But for light stuff (i'll use up to about 30lb or so), they're fine, and convienients. Decoy also do some tiny ones that are plenty strong for chucking lures around.

I wouldn't trust the little
I wouldn't trust the little ones either. Straightened a 27lb or 29lb one on 10lb line.

Have had a lot of trial and
Have had a lot of trial and (unfortunately) error with snaps over the years and had constantly gone back and forth, snap to loop knot. When changing lures up to thirty or forty times a day Barra fishing I had to do something, get sick of tying loop knots and new leaders on and having 300 bits of knotted mono all over the deck, Finally found a snap I'm happy with, Decoy egg snaps in size 3 for 20lb and size 4 in 30 to 50lb, I'm sure the smaller ones would do the trick on bream lures too.

trebles
flattening the barbs on the trebles doesnt work for tailor, they will through the lure time and time again when you get them close to shore, I tried it a few weeks ago and lost a heap of fish.
Good point with the bail arm uncut I usually do that with impact simkers lol lucky I have been making my own for a few years now

We snuk out this morning
Herbie managed an early Tailor close to 50cm and then apart from a few hits, nothing. There is a bit of weed around but hopefully that will clear over the coming days.

Just keep trying mate. For Tailor I dont mind the snap as it is unlikely to get bustted off and allow for a lure change if needed. I also recon that setup will work for you.

Clips are for lazy fisho's IMO. Lost a few good fish myself in my younger days due to clip failure.
