You read Japanese???

Miya Epoch is a good commercial brand but there is no english version. Ive used a couple but find it not really user friendly. Speed control is on a dial under the reel.

I prefer the Daiwa Tanacom Bull 1000, lighter and theres a lever for turning it on and control speed continuously. Comes with an RCS BLING knob as well.

I agree with Honsu, I think they hold more line than the shimano to..

electric reel

Fri, 2011-06-03 21:17

i imported my diawa tanacom bull a few years back now when only the single spped was available in aus!  and it has caught many fish without missing a beat! make sure you get the two speed though as when you get a big fish on it drops back a gear helping you pull the fish in!

Megatwin

The reel is not auto change gear.....you have to press the button to go to low gear. These reels are all "Power Assisted" reels NOT winching reels!! You will cook the motor if you do it often. If you want to winching electric reel, get the Marine Power 3000 or an Alvey Reef King. The electric motor is there to help you retrieve the rig or jig back NOT to winch big fish up.

automatic changing

Sat, 2011-06-04 08:08

the reel does change automaticaly but only with big fish on! and as till said sometimes it does change down a gear when pulling in your sinker and big baits but you can usually just hit the button and it will switch back into high gear.

auto switching

Fri, 2011-06-03 21:54

The megatwin automatically switches gears, not everyone that sells them has used one though.

I haven't experiemced it, but I hear the megatwin can have problems retrieving big sinkers in HG, might not be worth the extra $$$.

sold plenty of megatwin

Sat, 2011-06-04 08:51

sold plenty of megatwin 1000's and never had a problem with them. after fishing with both the tanacom and megatwin i would definatily choose the megatwin. The two speed function comes in really handy. Also they megatwin has an extra 22ball bearings then the tanacom. Like honsu said they are not for flat out winching, generally we hook a fish, fight it 60-80m off the bottom then slowly power assist it up

we have one in stock now if you want to check one out

I use the tanacom 1000

Sat, 2011-06-04 09:26

So far ive done over 100 drops with 2.5 kg leads and its working well. i have heard from guys using heavier leads that the mega twin in high gear really labours when winching up. i really cant say how long ill get out of the tanacom as Luke R has said in previous threads these reels were designed to fish japanese waters down to 150meters.

if anyone has had them die id like to know what there life expectancy is. ?

Electric reels

Tony, I spoke to Ryan and he said he's had to replace the motor & dragwashers on his Daiwa megatwin but he's also used it a shit load over the last 3 years.

As for recomendations Grayzee, Ryans mates use the Daiwa Tanacom 1000 on his boat and they're happy with em.

Both the Tanacom Bull and the Shimano Beast Master 9000,the shimano is the best by Far.

But nearly twice the price, but easily worth It.

Daiwa Electric!!!

Sun, 2012-08-05 21:54

I've been using the Daiwa Megatwin electric reels for many years now out there in the super deep and rate them!

The Daiwa Megatwin 1000MT holds plenty of braid and the two speed automatic gearbox setup is great when its under load....... that being heavy sinker/rig setup or if you fight the fish with the electric which I dont do!

Fish winch

Mon, 2012-08-06 16:47

Check out the Fish Winch conversion kits from the states.

They do conversions for a number of common Penn, Shimano Daiwa reels.

Looking at that fish winch,

Mon, 2012-08-06 19:38

Looking at that fish winch, would be a really cheap way for a electric winch !! Looks like the capacity of most of the reels they fit just isnt enough but !

EDIT : Senator L2 would come close

Yeah a shame they don;t do it

Mon, 2012-08-06 20:28

Yeah a shame they don;t do it for any of the metal reels.

A couple points though.

1) No line counter.

2) On some at least, no level wind. Braid at 150m/min will just cut your fingers off.
