Effect fn Water depth on wieght size
Submitted by One Eyed Phil on Mon, 2010-12-27 09:34
Is ther a basic formula that allows me to determine what weight to use to get to the bottom (or not) ?
I doubt for example that a 1oz wieght would take a rig to the bottom in 20 meters of water, but a 20 oz weight would be over kill in 2 metres
How can I deteermine what to use in any given depth?
Regards

It will mostly depend on your
It will mostly depend on your drift speed and the currents as well as the depth. Your line diameter will also have an effect. I've jigged 70g metals (bit over 2oz) in 90m but it was exceptional weather. At best you would get a ballpark figure but it will depend on the day.
For 40m, most people would use 12-20oz I would say. In 20m, probably 4-12. For 80m, 16oz and up. Been a while since I baited though, so someone else would be able to give you better estimates.
The best thing you can do is have a range of weights in the right sizes and play around with them. It's a lot easier once you get a feel of what is too light and what is too heavy.

weights
as there are so many variables, depth drift, swell etc you would need to experiment
i believe its best to have as little weight as you can just to hold bottom
in 30 to 50 meters i use either 8 or 10 size. i find if i go too heavy i dont get as many bites.
