Echo sounder info

Ok so I've been going through reading old threads, very helpfull. I intend to buy a book about it soon. But I have one question for now, in shallow water ie 4 - 30m what Hz setting do people prefer to use and why? I understand that 200Hz is a narrower beam and 50Hz is wider but what difference does this make?

200 khz is for use mainly up to 100m ( you will get better detail on this setting) but depending on your transducer you can go deeper up to around 300m from memory. 50khz for deeper fishing the beam gradually gets wider the deeper you go.

yeah there is plenty of info on the web for free, I have lowrance so tthere are heaps of yanks that have tutorials on youtube.  The book by John Adams (yes thats the one Mandurahmatt) is more generic but probably more helpful in understanding how an echo sounder works so you can fine tune yours to suit conditions as opposed to what setting works best most of the time.
