drink or not 2 drink ,that is the question.

After seeing various posts on here around fishing , boatn , drinking, 4wd etc

just wondering what peoples thoughts are.

Are aussies still a bunch of drunkn yobbos or have we changed?

I love a beer or 3 at the end of a days shore fishing, but have never seen the sense

all day boatn and drinking sessions, due to the conflict on safety.

When it hits the fan , which happens when you least expect it, are drunk skippers and deckies

any good?

Back when I had a boat any deckies that started with" I will bring the cartons"

usually never came out. Im not a wowser or a saint by any stretch , but whos with me?

photos at 2 rocks , and yes I had  brew to top off a great day.

couple of beers on the beach, by all means
but its ridiculous when i see people at places like north and south mole, at night, no headlamp, on steep rocks, sinking beers like theres no tomorrow

On our boat nobody drinks at all, just too much to go wrong, cant afford to have the slowed reaction time.

being a non drinker and

Thu, 2012-03-29 12:10

being a non drinker and working on the door in a pub for 16 years

i see it from different eyes

i love going out of charter boats when guys are getting smashed cos i know they will be on the floor or spewing up and more room for me

but to drive a vessal pissed is just not on

i think drinking is ok but many are out of touch as to how much is too much

and get too complacent because they havent had anything bad to happen yet

i see people make bad decisions every weekend ie we have regualr drunks come get smashed and drive home every week

one week there luck will run out i tell them but they just say ah been doing this for 20years sheel be right

bring it on i say, nothing

Thu, 2012-03-29 12:35

bring it on i say, nothing better than a beer or 3 out on the boat or on the beach. no probs here and i've never had one single person write themselves off, you're out to fish not get pissed.

I'm gonna hazard a guess that those who say no beers onboard etc are from down south and those who swear by it are largely up north with a few execptions. If i was down in Perth and fishing if it wasn't hot i wouldn't even pack the beers onboard, i drink when it's hot and there is nothing better then some water to knock the edge off then enjoy a ale in between spots or drifts. Perth i'd be packing the thermos with coffee and thats about it.

Shoot me down for stereotyping but i don't think i'm going to be far off here. I'd like to know what the guys who have headed north for the FW comp think with some warm days out there.

Drinking

Thu, 2012-03-29 12:47

I don't drink on the boat just too much to go wrong and then I can't be bothered cleaning it properly. Plus I always drive.
Landbased I drink less and less these days it's no fun tying knots in the dark half cut. Wait until I have finished then have a few

Thu, 2012-03-29 13:03

I wont drink on my boat & get pissed off when others think they can.

Dont get me wrong, I love a drink, but on the boat I am skipper & then driver. If I cant drink, why should they!!

On the beach, go for it & I'll join in. Stay the night though & make sure you are fit to drive home.

I drink heaps and never have

Thu, 2012-03-29 13:07

I drink heaps and never have a problem.  Too bloody hot to sit in a boat all day and not sink a few tubes.

Maybe some people cant handle their piss.  If you are a cadbury girl (glass and a half), then dont drink.

Thu, 2012-03-29 13:25

T'would be a long night out on the boat/kayak for 6 hours chasing mulloway and bream if i didnt have a few stubbys to drink. would never drive home over the limit though!

During the day out on the water however, id prefer to just drink water (if i have time) as i try and sta as hydrated as poossible in the sun.

Try Darwin

Thu, 2012-03-29 13:29

I lived in Darwin for 7 years - Lite beer was banned ! The only water you had was the ice keeping the beer crisp !!!!!!!!!

You stopped at every pub on route to your spot ! - god help you if the stippers were on !

You stopped at every pub on your way back fron your spot !

Unlimited speed zones !

Bulldust corrugated roads - for endless freakn kilometres ! - so your drank the kilometres away till you got to your spot !

Mmmm - now that I think about it - maybe the northern boys do drink a little more !!

This was 10 years ago - thank god times have changed.

When asked by a non-fisherman 'how many fishing rods do you really need?' the correct answer is either:

n+1 (where n is the number of fishing rods you currently own); or

n-1 (where n is the number of fishing rods which would cause your significant other to dump you.

Responsibility

Thu, 2012-03-29 16:46

While you are on a boat, regardless of where you are or what you are doing, your skipper is responsible for your safety.

So if you get pie eyed and hurt yourself while in his care, his bum is in the sling. Its his duty to you to make sure you arrive home in one piece, if that means no alcohol so be it.

Hydration

Thu, 2012-03-29 17:06

Well, love a beer when spending a night on the beach, its relaxing, fishing or not whatever not alot can go wrong and its enjoyable.

Some blokes seem to think they are a big man if they get pissed everywhere they go. If you've had quite a few and for some reason end up in the drink and need to 1 stay afloat, 2 stay alert, 3 stay hydrated well alcohol with put you behind on all 3 counts compared to a person who hasn't consumed any.

Really I have never really understood why people seem to think that being out on the water is less dangerous. Mate you get pissed at home or your mates and hopefully all that happens is you end up on the ground. Out there the ground is a long friggen way away.

Real men act responsibly :)

I leave my drinkin to boat cleaning time, goes down a treat...

Up north

Thu, 2012-03-29 18:36

Agree with Brucesta and Norun Nofun, We do overnighters, camp up inside river systems regularly at night, don't boat at night or fish for that matter.

Normally drink steady during the day and then when mudcrabs are cooked its bourbon time listen to footy ( in season) and relax.

It's un-Australian to be doing a night beach fishing , and not have a few cold ones to blow the froth off.

but in the boat , it sends me down.    I do too longer days out to even consider it.  i need uppers , not downers

Dry boat for me

Sat, 2012-03-31 15:08

Too much can go wrong with a skin full, though I don;t begrudge a deckie having a few on the way back in.

We fish pretty hard on my boat so not much time to kick back and enjoy a beer.

HOWEVER...

The moment we get back home to clean the boat etc, I'll neck a few in quick time while I fillet the fish. Love my beers at the Reeltime Bar.

Sat, 2012-03-31 15:58

I agree with Brucesta, since moving to Perth I hardly ever think to pack the beers for a days fishing... usually the weather here is shit and cold so I don't feel like drinking anyway. Up north was a different story though but it depended what I was doing, always smashed a fair bit while barra fishing but when lure casting it was a bit difficult to fish and drink at the same time so usually left it for the end of the day. Billfish trolling can be daaaaangerous...

Old fart doesn't

Sat, 2012-03-31 16:48

drink any beers on the boat, he's the skipper, deckies can bring a few beers to drink on the way home from a successful days fishing. Squidding, whiting fishing in the sound, never ever beer on board.  But when he's filleting the fish at home, yes he loves a coldie to drink while cleaning fish.  He never dranks in the boat or car, as when he worked, his  truck license (MC)  was his livehood.  If he drinks I drive home, as I don't drink.
