Not exactly down rigging
I have used a down rigger to take a bait down to 120 metres this saved me having a big sinker on the same line as the bait (mulie)and when I got a good hook up all I had was the weight of the fish no big sinker as well. The down rigger weight approx. 1.5 kg was then retrieved by electric motor driving an alvey reel with the cable on it.

One of the fishing mags
had an article on it a while back, see if I can dig it up. (FishLife?) This bloke was doing it in Spencer gulf on the big pinky hotspots, so it isn't that deep , around 20 metres max? he was using deep diving 180mm minnows, reckoned they had to be deep divers so the downrigger weight wasn't scaring them away, makes sense. He was actively targetting aggregations, and didn't know if they wanted to eat the intruder or bash it, but the end result was the same. Could have application for the channels in Shark bay? keeping the lure free of weed could be a problem.
