Disaster, what are some options?

Just after getting back from my last fishing trip to Hervey Bay one of the boys had a serious motorbike accident, after the initial injuries he was lucky to survive and everything was looking like it was going to ok. Finally they got him in for an MRI, and tragically, it looks like he will never be able to use his left arm again. Was absolutely devastating news for him, his family and his friends. He is a keen fisherman, shooter, and paintballer, but now it looks as if he is not going to do alot of things the way he used to do them before. He is alive, which is amazing all things considered... but this is a massive knock for him.

Just wondering if anyone has seen, or heard of any ways a person with the use of only one arm can continue to fish. Hopefully one day we can get him catching some fish again.

Thanks guys.

Sad to hear mate. If I lost

Sad to hear mate. If I lost the use of an arm I'd do anything I damned well could to ensure I could fish. Sounds like he's young and strong willed so I reckon he'll find a way.

Dept of Fisheries

Sorry to hear about your mate. That's terrible news.

It might be worth speaking to Dept of Fisheries - I seem to recall a feature in one of there regular publications about a group of community volunteers who work with the disabled / elderly to get them out fishing. They may have some useful insights about accessibility options for your mate and specialised gear that will see him bring in plenty more big ones!

Good luck to him for his recovery.

hey mate

from memory i think it was lamby(member) that had his mate with one arm fishing out with them, no probs and he out fished them too i think.

lifes not over mate, he is just going to have to learn some other ways for everything.

we were right into our water skiing a while back mate and one of our mates had one leg, beach starts, deep water starts, you name it he done it, better skier than i ever was and he stood straight after getting smashed on the bourbons while we are all falling over.

life has just started again for him thats all!!

Thanks for the suggestions and links guys. Yep thats right guys, very thankful that he's alive cos he came bloody close. It was pretty shitty news to get once we thought he was going to get through it ok though. Just wanting to be ready with some suggestions for him when he is ready to fish again... he'll get there!!!

PS - this all happened because some f-wit ran a red light and hit him....

Sorry to hear of the terrible news. I'd like to share this Youtube clip with you about this guy - Clay Dyer is an American Pro Bass Fisherman - not the easiest of gigs for any fisherman  so have a look at this if you like- his spirit is quite simply breath taking!

Electric reel and gimbal harness

Tue, 2012-11-13 20:14

I think would be my first thoughts for him getting back into fishing.

sorry to hear the news, I just got back from marraboro just near Hervey Bay so I know you would have been well relaxed untill you got this terrible news.

try to keep his spirits up as best as possible going forward in the future.

Yes its a wonderful video

Tue, 2012-11-13 21:16

It certainly allows us all the opportunity to stop and think a little of our own circumstances  - to keep things in reality when you see how a person like Clay deals with what life throws at him every day. I've shown it to some of the kids I teach in the past to open their eyes up and help them realise how fortunate they are - he is truly an impressive person.

not good at all but as mentioned lucky to be alive. We are a very addaptive species and can overcome all obsticals as Clay has shown.if boat fishing is the go as mentioned the gimbal and harnas would be the way to go as you wouldnt need to pump and wind with your arms just let your knees do the work. im sure with some determination your mate will be back into the action soon. good luck to him , your going to have to show some of the fish he will be geting in the future. remember you cant hold a good man down

As the boys have said a mate

Wed, 2012-11-14 08:31

As the boys have said a mate of mine is a double amputee (arm + leg) & still fishes with us, he is an avid shooter / hunter which is his main passion & does this regularly. Here is an old post of him out, no special equipment just using the gunnel a t - curve & backed off stella http://fishwrecked.com/forum/sw-wednesday.

Insipring stuff Lamby, if

Insipring stuff Lamby, if there is a will there is a way. Your mate seems like the perfect person from my mate to talk to about getting back into the things he loves when the time is right. If your mate would be up to it id love to set that up in the future, I think the hardest part for Jordy will be being able to see that he still can do the things he loves, abit of advice from others will definitely set in the right direction.

Sure mate he would have no

Wed, 2012-11-14 16:35

Sure mate he would have no problems with that, after the accident there are certainly some intense demons to battle psychologically aside from the physical that we couldn’t even begin to comprehend.
Good to see you sticking by him, it’s usual for people to find out after a major life event who their mates are but I was still surprised at supposed close mates who flagged him or couldn’t ride it out.
I always kept things as normal as possible which is what he wanted, anyone overhearing us talk would think I am such an arsehole for the shit we sling at each other. Half the fun has been getting back into the old hobbies, little prick learnt how to play FIFA on the ps3 with one hand & doesn’t he let me know it when he wins.
Good luck to Jordy, flick me a pm for details
