gauranteed dhufish
in 3 - 6m of water, with fresh jellyfish for bait.
if that doesnt work, fuel up, and head to the 300m deep mark, and use pancakes with 3 egg yolks on a gang of snelled 2/0's.
if that doesnt work, try everywhere else until YOU figure out where the best depth is.
sorry, but i did my apprenticeship the hard way and learnt learnt my own methods through trial and error. spent 10's of thousands of dollars on boats and gear and techniques, and be damned if i'm giving them away willy nilly.

yeah
nah thats fair enough. prob uncalled for.
just gets me goat a bit that all this info is passed over the net on a minute by minute basis, to A LOT of people that don't deserve it. why should i disclose the findings of a million of my hours research for all to see.
all of a sudden, you start seeing photos of 36 red emperor on a filleting table, with 5 guys standing round laughing, looking forward to what day two has instore.
i think its about time peolpe started doing less typing, and more fishing.

yes i understand comepletly
yes i understand comepletly where you are coming from mate , wasnt asking for gps co-ords , just general info , cuz people catch them in a huge range of water depths and country , i do catch a few myself , like u said trial and error , and yeh i think alot of people today in society while fishing are to greedy , you only need a 1 or 2 decent size fish to last a fair time , fish doesnt last forever in your freezer , if u aint going to eat it dont kill it return it , the oceans will appreciate it .

Well
Ok to get this post back on the road...
Well i say south of the river anywhere on the five fathom bank/west side of Garden Island your in with a chance. Central metro, you will have to head out to at least 35mtrs plus to be in with a chance. As you get north of Mindarie..two rocks ect..you will catch them in real close.
Dhui fishing is a fine art mate. Lots of people say when the crays are in close the dhuis are as well...so different times of the year, your luck changes.
Read lots of mags, talk to other fishos...and divers, guys at tackle shops and with those tools, go get those barstards.

agree with wade dhui fishing
agree with wade dhui fishing is a very very fine art but the best advice is go to your local tackle shop and ask thats the best way to find info about a species, i dont have any tips for the metro area because i dont live in the metro area but im sure some of the experts on the site can give you some tips
and scotto i dont understand why would you post a comment if you didnt want to give out info any ways instead you just post some thing ridiculous.......

you whoa?
i thought i explained myself pretty well? maybe i should explain it in "ridiculous" terms....
the reason i didnt want to give out info is simple:
i'll be honest, and say i dont consider myself to be a shit fisherman. it has taken me many years to figure out what factors work best, for what species, where, when, and most importantly, WHY.
ALL it takes is for one person to write it, and all of a sudden, thousands of people have read it. before you know it, theres a whole heap of people "out wide", that honestly dont deserve to be "out wide", smashing dhus baldies etc left, right, and centre. whaddya know, all of a sudden, everyone's complaining because the government want to ban catching certain fish because the stocks are low.
the truth is, i consider myself a very lucky mofo to have caught dhus over 20kg, which is modern eras benchmark BIG dhu.
the reality is, i consider myself even luckier to have been told stories by older guys, of dhus reaching 25kg (and sometimes bigger), which is virtually an untouchable target these days.
the question is, when are 15kg dhus going to be the benchmark, and when are we going to realise that these fish are getting smaller, and fewer?????
call me ridiculous if you think me dispersing my secrets on a "world wide website", isnt going to impact on how my kids grow up wondering what a dhufish looks like.
p.s. respect to dhuboi. it was an honest question that probably didnt warrant the responses i gave. it will be interseting to see who else replies to this, and what they say.

bitfull of yourself arent u
if u dont want to give away your secrets dont post anything. Quiet simple.Or if u want to be a dead shit and talk yourself up without helping anyone out keep doing what your doing makes you look like a right knob head. People post comments to help people and to get a little info off experienced anglers not to hear how good one person THINKS he is.

Dhui secrets
there realy isnt any secrets as to the whereabouts of this fish.We have caught them from the 5fathom bank right out to the 90's on flat ground and on lumps, with lots of patience and many hours out on the water you will find the area you will get them , we would have spent the last 5 years fishing the local waters and probably only landed maybe 30 in that time. it would be nice to go out and get a dhui every trip but personally there are better fish to fry kg's and nanni's just to name a couple, yes the dhuis are nice to eat and you get a good feed off one fish but they are a dying breed in metro waters

What secrets?
No i have not yet been fortunate enough to break into the `20 plus club` and knowing my luck i probably never will. But i have however caught a fair amount of dhu`s myself over time.
I do however honestly beieve that dhu`s most of the 5-10kg dhu`s are transient due to the conditions of the moon, tide and food available (if you know what i mean). I certainly have depths that i target at certain times of the year, but more importantly i have caught dhu`s in everything from 6m to 45m.
So get out there and and put in the hours and good luck.

Without being specific
Even some of the comments above ae real gems if you know how to sift.
And I have caught plenty of double figure dhus in less than six metres of water on unweighted occy tenticles and seen even larger following hooked ones like schooling tailor, in that shallow depth but time of the year and location are the key. And that still applies even to the season just gone, gave the location to Fisheries Research as it enables then to secure fish without any risk of barotrauma. Despite this knowledge I have still to truly work out productive zones / depths in midwinter and I have been fishing well over 50 years. Never stop learning !!!!!

Everyone has to start
Everyone has to start somewhere and I bet most of you guys on this sight when you first started asked the questions, to get you started .It’s not like the guys asked for your gps marks just some general info. Not too sure about the science bit but with a little time spent looking for ground, this can lead to good catches. Small lump or coral patches. Dhuies can be caught in all depth of water up to 100m, this time of year the fish seem to be in the 30-40m, depending on the size of your boat, inside the three mile reef also can produce some good fish to 20kg, dhuies like the broken bottom with plenty of sand patches, you will see them sitting in the middle of these holes while diving. Try different bait and don't be scared to try different things I to catch plenty of these fish but as i am not giving away my spots, a little advice i can give. There is some good info on the fwa cds and there are some good books which will give good info, not a lot but hope that helped .Good luck

What the
I thought we all joined this site to learn and help out others who may not know, some of the comments I understand but,did any one of us ever get help from a more experienced person, advise on bait, gear, area, these are general things that can help,so come on people for my part,Dhiboy,a sea worthy boat,so you and your crew can come back safe, good fresh bait,Occy,Squid,Mullet,Mullies and any small fish you can catch,in the area you fish,a reef or coral bottom,or broken ground, try around were you see cray pots,as these indicate good ground (usually)if you snag a cray line,Tye a knot so the owner will be aware that a 10/24onz sinker and 8/10 O hooks might be coming up,using a hand line,heavy,50 plus kilo ,not for the size of the fish but to help cuts in your finger joints, electrical tape also helps,if using a rod then braided line 15/20 kilo and some mono trace, check out the site (Fish wrecked )for these, get in touch with fisheries for size and bag limits,or even your local tackle shop should be able to help .Dhu fish can hit like an express train,or nibble like a small fish, they can also suck the bait ,I am sure that there are a great many others here with a lot more knowledge than me ,and I believe that some well offer you advice,I wish you the best of luck in finding the elusive West Australian Dhu fish and any others you can catch, respect the sea and the local fishing regulations.jersey

Good advice jersey.
Bob doesn't fish here in Perth anymore he used to go out to 100 metres plus to get dhuie, baldies & snapper, but all his secret spots have bloody boats on them know and charter boats ... so we leave most of our fishing for Leeman ... plus the bank is a lot closer to go to and I can know go, broken ground is a must to look for, we always use occie, fresh caught sh%$#t fish (they seem to love fresh fish on the hook), the current also plays a big part in dhuie fishing, they are lazy they won't chase your bait, if you are drifting too fast, they look at it and say bugger, whereas snapper, baldie's & black bums will travel a little bit to munch on your bait. We don't use rods, we use winches and you can feel with the line on your finger when they ae nibbling or sucking then sink that hook and wind up nice and slowly. Its taken Bob years and years like all the comments on here to find and understand the ground you are looking at on the sounder, yes the weather does play a factor, keep a book on the weather that you caught your fish, date etc moon phase, you'll be suprised on looking at what you have caught and then you go back to the year before, interesting, won't say anymore as I'll get in the sh%$#T

No exact answers here but thanks for asking anyway.
I am no expert but I have caught my share of Dhuies in all depths of water. Looking for the broken ground is a good start and a whole lot of patience and luck will go a long way toward results. Nice healthy baits as fresh as you can get it with a good drift also will help.
I smile at those guys who believe they have the ocean floor mapped out for themselves and an agressive approach to anyone who dare ask for advice in locating species. Get real guys.

preference!
What do you think are the best grounds and water depth to fish for Dhufish are in the Metro Area ?
Dhufish activity changes ie seasons etc so their prefered depths vary likewise. No such "locked" depth!
Me i fish from 30m-80m but have caught them to 120m!
As for best grounds, no hard & fast rule. They can be found on flatcoral, lumps, reefs and over broken ground. If i had to look closely at a particular preference ie just Dhufish then i'd look at Lumps.
For me, there's many quality fish out there and Dhufish are just one of many. My point, i target good ground & fish activity on my sounder and get the mix!
My preference!

Yep Ive caught dhuies
Yep Ive caught dhuies between 8m and 90m.
Depends on the reef structure your fishing on as to what depths suit.
Most Fish seem to be present in the 30-50m range.
Picked up some in the 50-70m range lately.
