Demersals on livebaits??

Hi guys,

I was just thinking about starting to live bait this summer and was wondering if anyone has caught demersals on live baits, particularly herring as they are plentiful?

Also, if many have caught Yellowtail Kingfish on herring as well?

Cheers,

All my readings are that ytk's love live baits, particularly squid.  dollies love live herring, and pink snapper love live sand whiting.  live crabs for snapper and baldies too.

Yep. I haven't personally fished with rock crabs but I understand they're like lollies to baldies.
I discovered last year at monkey mia that you can walk the beaches after dark and catch ghost crabs on the sand. (fun task to do with tbe young bloke...) kept them alive overnight and then hooked them through the back coming out the side. caught some nice pinkies on them.

I was out about a month ago and fishing live butter fish on single dropper paternoster rigs with 8oz sinkers. The sambos were taking them and I got a solid dhu on it too. I've tried whiting but they don't like being pulled up from 20m of water to begin with and don't have the fight of the butter fish. If I fish in close now, I take the time to get some live bait. It also stops the bycatch of wrasse as I haven't caught any of them with livies.

Sergeant baker

Fri, 2015-01-23 09:43

Dhus cant resist a bite sized sergeant baker when floated down and as randall said pinkies love sand whiting. Even a freshly caught sand whiting that has died will produce when floated down.

If your after YTKs then live yakkas are hard to beat.

Just behind 3 mile if you find some whiting in about 20m anchor and chuck in some pollard. Drop your whiting rig down with small bits of bait, that's how I've been getting heaps of them. Great bait and everything loves them, especially live

 Just reading the Australian

Fri, 2015-01-23 19:02

Just reading the Australian fish guide and it says single 12 long shank hook and one or no split shot sinker or weighted bait jigs fished lightly so I am assuming they feed in the entire water column but will come up to bran or pollard???  hence they can be kept longer in the live bait tank...

Yea, they feed in the whole

Fri, 2015-01-23 23:22

Yea, they feed in the whole water column but I've been getting heaps as bycatch going for whiting in 20m so on or near the bottom. In shallower water I fish unweighted for them with a size 4 or 6 circle hook or size 8 - 12 long shank with a small fillet of mulie. Bait chaser rigs work well too and would definitely be worth a go in the deeper water.

Fri, 2015-01-23 10:14

yep, i use yakka's up here jigged up off the channel markers and moorings as livies on a snelled 2 hook dropper for reds, trout and cod etc, it can get you away from the pickers but i guess like Sambo's can be a pest down there, the Sharks can move in up here too if you're unlucky usimg livies. I also keep what i don't use billfishing too and freeze them up and use 1/2 a fish on the same rig when they are plentiful. size from 150mm to 200mm suits the rig. scaley macks and what not down there would be a good shot.

Fri, 2015-01-23 12:14

I've recently caught dhuies, blackarse and pinkies on live sand whiting. The wrass don't go near them so you know you will be onto a decent fish if you get a bite on one. I find them particularly useful when fishing heavy reef in shallow water (ie: 3 mile) which are usually infested with small shit fish.

apart from sambos the only nuisance can be NW Blowies which will ruin your day regardless if they're around.

Wow guys thanks for the replies!

Will be giving sand whiting a shot... Yeah yakkas are quite a hard one to catch down in the region i fish but ive seen a few lately, maybe the warmer waters??

So could anyone sum up if YTKs will hit a live herring? Probably yes but it would be good to get someone elses advice.

Cheers

Single through the nose so they don't die on the way down or up and hook is secure. Plus the vast majority of fish hit the bait head first so they don't choke on the spines. Bridle rigging is good but through the nose is easy for lazy fishos like me

Nah mate

Fri, 2015-01-23 21:18

No thats probably not the best way as it restricts the livie from swimming freely resulting in a dead livie. The best way is to use a bridle rig. First id probably use a wind on leader, then bring that down to a strong swivel, preferably a ball bearing one and whack a ball sinker on the wind-on-leader. Then add a metre more of leader to a Mustad Hoodlum and rig that to the bridle.

Soft bead?

Fri, 2015-01-23 21:21

Do you use anything like a soft bead above the sinker to stop it wearing the dacron loop at the braid end??

Nah

No because the sinker is rarely up that far on the leader though you could if you wanted?

Ive got a few solid YTK on live herring. They can be very fussy with big hooks hanging off your livey. Go as small as you dare

Can you use heavy braid in place of dacron for your bridles???  I have some old 15kg braid that is too short.  thought I might make up a heap of bridles from it.

up north yes the live bait can bring sharks, but so does catching fish, i'd rather lose a bait/rig than a bloody good fish and the rig as well..

Herring, whiting and yellowtail

Thu, 2015-01-29 17:08

All great baits live and dead. When the fish are off the bite having a live herring down there can turn up the action. Herring are great live bait as said before, probably the best as they are left alone by little wrasse and other undesirable species. Whiting will also catch dhuies, harlequins, breaksea and pinkies. My pb dhuie was on a small sand whiting. Max

 Just use a single

Thu, 2015-01-29 21:44

Just use a single paternoster rig, it works absolutely fine for all diemersals in all depths from 10 - 200m, bridle rigging is a waste of time and energy when a paternoster is more than adequate. To catch yakkas ( sabiki's) try looking in your tackle store for a Sabiki rig, every tackle store has em, and try fishing with it on any bait you see on your sounder or dangle it off a jetty or the boat ramp

I Just use two snelled 5/0s on 50lb trace bottom hook pinned just above the lateral line but under the first dorsel finn from head end n second same but back towards tail end. Also have caught heaps of dhuies n snapper + sharks + sambo"s on live wrasse/parrotfish, sandwhiting and herring n yellowtail.
